(HILLSDALE, Mich.) – After two games against brand new opponents, Lake Erie opens the G-MAC season with a foe it has met quite often in Hillsdale. Saturday's meeting with the Chargers will be the eighth in the series, and the Storm are looking for their first win against their neighbors to the north.
The defense continues to shine as it shutout the opposition in the second half for the second consecutive week in last week's 13-9 defeat to Davenport. Leading the way was redshirt junior Justin Growel who had 11 tackles, five which were for a loss, with two sacks and two forced fumbles. As a result, he earned G-MAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, the first weekly accolades for the Storm since the 2017 season.
Lake Erie currently tops the conference in scoring defense yielding just 17 points per game. Hillsdale is currently sixth with 38.5 points per game. Both teams rank the same in total defense with the Storm giving up 317.5 yards per game compared to the 492.5 given up by the Chargers.
The Green and White defense also recovered three fumbles against the Panthers last week to win the turnover battle. The three recoveries currently is tied for most in a single game by any team in the conference along with Ohio Dominican against Shepherd and Kentucky Wesleyan against Quincy.
Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Frank "Muddy" Waters Stadium. Coverage will be available on the Great Midwest Digital Network.
