PERRY, Ohio (April 18, 2009) - Lake Erie College held its annual Green and White Spring Football Game at Perry Alumni Stadium in front of a highly enthusiastic crowd on what turned out to be a gorgeous Saturday afternoon. The format of the game was an offense versus defense style with a modified scoring system. The Storm's offense wore white jerseys with black pants while the defense donned the traditional green.
There may have been a cloudless sky on this warm, sunny day, but the Storm was in full-force as it went head-to-head in the second event of its kind in program history. The white team was able to hold off the green by the score of 41-30.
Big plays were made on both sides of the ball as neither side held a lead bigger than five points through three quarters of play. The offense was able to score three touchdowns on the day with the first on a 23-yard play-action pass from freshman Sean Bedevelsky (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) to Dave Romeo (Eastlake, Ohio/North). The white’s second touchdown came again by way of the play-action variety - this time as Matt Krumpak (McDonald, Ohio/McDonald) hooked up with Steve Bensinger (Poland, Ohio/South Range) for a 13-yard touchdown.
The third quarter belonged to the defense as defensive backs Aaron Gaines (Akron, Ohio/Buchtel) and Tom Dempsey (Stow, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) collected back-to-back interceptions in order to halt drives. The green defensive line was a factor the entire game as Josh Freeman (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor)) made a critical tackle for a loss on a fourth and one play.
The white team was sparked by an 85-yard run by Bedevelsky in the fourth quarter, which led to a 5-yard touchdown run by Romeo. The white squad was able to grind out a few more first downs to run out the clock and secure the win.
The Storm opens its 2009 season on Aug. 27 at Gannon University.
