ERIE, Pa.- The Lake Erie College baseball team battled the #1 Mercyhurst University Lakers on Wednesday (April 19) afternoon in a nine-inning game.
The Storm fell to the nationally-ranked Lakers 8-7.
Lake Erie loaded the bases with three of the first four batters reaching in the top of the first. Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) and Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) singled while Caleb Waller (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion) walked with one out. Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) cleared the bases with a grand slam to left field.
Mercyhurst scored two runs in the first and second innings, tying the game at four.
In the fourth inning, the Storm loaded the bases again with two singles and an error. Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla. / Oakleaf), who led off with a walk, came home on a throwing error. Waller singled home two runs as the Storm took a 7-4 lead.
The Lakers tied the game with three runs in the sixth inning and plated the winning run in the seventh inning.
Paxton went four-for-five with two runs scored in the game. Williams had three hits, with his four runs batted in. Carver added two hits on the afternoon.
The Storm will return to Painesville to continue the series with the Lakers. The teams will meet again on Tuesday (April 25) with a 2:00 PM start.
