PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College baseball team fell to the Tiffin University Dragons in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader on Wednesday (April 12) afternoon.
Tiffin took game one by a 9-0 score and swept the doubleheader with a 13-6 win in the nightcap.
Tiffin jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning.
The Storm attempted to tie the game in the second inning with two runners on but Tiffin escaped the inning with no damage.
The Dragons scored two runs in the third, one run in the fifth and five in the sixth to win game one 9-0.
Four different players had a hit in the game, including Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) with a double.
Tiffin scored one run in the first and three in the second, taking a 4-0 lead after one and a half innings.
Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) opened the bottom of the second inning with his first homerun of the season, a solo shot to right field. Lake Erie trailed 4-1 after two innings.
The Dragons added a run in the top of the fourth before Lake Erie responded with a run of their own in the bottom half. Caleb Waller (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion) lined a double down the right field line, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a RBI single by Alex Lind (Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati Elder).
After the Dragons pushed the lead to 6-2, Lake Erie rallied for four straight runs across two innings to tie the game at six.
In the fifth inning, the Storm loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. One run came home on a Tiffin throwing error and the second came home on a wild pitch.
An inning later, Lake Erie got the first two runners aboard, Lind and Nathan Erzen (Brookpark, Ohio / Berea-Midpark)with singles. The runners were moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt prior to a pitching change. Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) singled home Lind and Erzen.
Lake Erie threatened in the bottom of the eighth with a runner in scoring position. Lind walked to begin the inning and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt by the Dragons' pitcher. Lind was called out on a close fielder's choice play at the plate, ending the threat.
Tiffin scored seven runs in the top of the ninth, to take the nightcap 13-6.
Birchmeier had three hits, with two RBI, one walk and one run scored. Waller and Lind each had two hits in the second game.
Sam Browning (Cincinnati, Ohio / Archbishop McNicholas) threw two and one third scoreless innings of relief work with two hits and two strikeouts.
The Storm will return the diamond with a four-game series against Grand Valley State on Friday (April 15) and Saturday (April 16).
