PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The Lake Erie College baseball team fell to Ashland University in a doubleheader Tuesday (April 28) in Painesville.
Ashland won game one 7-5 and game two 17-3.
The Eagles struck first, scoring a run in the top of the second and added three more in the third.
Sean Mathews (Washington, Mich./Warren De La Sale) singled through the left side to lead off in the third. With two outs, Louie Peterlin (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) hit a blooper to center which fell in and brought Mathews home to cut the lead to three. Zak DeCamp (Gahanna, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) followed up with a double of his own down the left field line to score Peterlin. Rutger Luebke (Medina, Ohio/Medina) reached third on an error, bringing DeCamp home and cutting the lead to one.
After Ashland plated two in the fourth, Jake Csizmadia (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) tripled to lead off the fifth. After Peterlin walked, DeCamp hit into a double play but scored Csizmadia. Luebke then hit a solo shot to right field, cutting the lead to one.
The Eagles added on run in the seventh and kept the Storm hitters at bay in the bottom of the frame to seal the win.
Lucas Raley (Hickley, Ohio/Medina Highland), DeCamp and Luebke had two hits apiece. Luebke had two RBIs while DeCamp and Peterlin had one apiece.
The Eagle bats got off to a hot start, scoring 12 before the Storm got on the board. In the bottom of the fifth, Mathews led off with a single. After Mathews moved to second, DeCamp hit a homerun to deep center to get the Storm on the board. DeCamp brought Darren Sackett (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) home in the seventh but it was not enough to overcome the Eagles advantage.
DeCamp led the Storm offense with two hits, three RBIs and one run.
The Storm is back in action this weekend for a four-game series with Hillsdale College in Painesville.
