PAINESVILLE, OHIO -- Lake Erie College had a pair of players named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Midwest Region Team announced this week (May 21), with senior second baseman Brayan Cacique (Caracas, Venezuela/John I. Leonard/Lakeland C.C.) and sophomore starting pitcher Brian Kilway (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) named to the coaches' all-star squad.
Cacique was named to the First Team, the third postseason all-star team honor he has received. He was also selected to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and Daktronics, Inc. All-Region first teams earlier this month. During the season, Cacique led the Storm in home runs (5), RBI (38), doubles (12), total bases (86), slugging percentage (.544) and on-base percentage (.455) while setting a school single-season record for walks (31). He also was second in batting (.348), hits (55), runs (32), triples (2) and finished third in stolen bases (10).
Kilway, a second-team All-GLIAC pick, was named to the ABCA All-Region Second Team as well. The second-year hurler went 6-1 with a 1.44 ERA in 10 starts, sharing the team lead and tying the school single-season record in wins and setting a new Lake Erie standard for ERA. He tossed four complete games, struck out 45 and held opponents to a .200 average in 62 2/3 innings of work. After suffering a 3-0 loss in his season debut, Kilway won his final six decisions of the season and was unbeaten in his final nine starts.
The two selections brings Lake Erie's total of ABCA all-region selections to seven in the past three seasons and eight overall. This is the third straight season the Storm has had at least two players picked for the all-star team.
Lake Erie finished with a 27-26 overall record and placed third during the regular season with a 22-14 GLIAC mark and qualified for the GLIAC Tournament for the first time. The Storm set a single season school record in wins for the second straight year and posted its first winning season ever.
