Storm Hits Century Mark on G-MAC Academic All-Conference Team

(INDIANAPOLIS) – Lake Erie Athletics continues to show its prominence in the classroom as 108 student-athletes have been named to the 2018-19 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference Team. The number shatters the previous mark of 75 student-athletes record last season.

Men's soccer totaled the most student-athletes with 15 players earning accolades including three with a perfect 4.0 GPA, the most of any team. Women's basketball (12), Softball (11), Volleyball (10), and men's basketball (10) also reached double-digits with Academic All-Conference selections.

This news comes on the tails of the Storm student-athletes setting another new record with a 3.05 overall GPA for the spring semester, the highest in the Division II era (2007-current) for Lake Erie College.

To be named to the Great Midwest Academic All-Conference Team, the student-athlete's grade point average must be a minimum of 3.30 based on the 4.0 system, the GPA shall be cumulative for the student-athlete's entire collegiate career and the student-athlete must have completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution. Student-athlete GPA's reported by each institution were reflected through the spring semester.

With nearly 400 student-athletes in 17 sports in 2018-19, the Storm saw the following landmarks achieved individually in Spring 2019:

  • 156 student-athletes with a 3.0 or higher semester GPA
  • 98 student-athletes with a 3.5 or higher semester GPA
  • 21 student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 semester GPA

The Men's Basketball team earned the highest GPA among Storm Male teams with a 3.29 semester GPA. Rising senior Gabe Kynard, a First-Team 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-District honoree, said "Striving to do my best in the pursuit of my degree is essentially striving to succeed post-graduation as I look to enter the workforce. Excelling academically tends to correlate directly to the work you are willing to do in the classroom i.e. studying, participating in class, completing homework, and seeking extra help when necessary."

The highest Storm Female team GPA was hotly contested between basketball and volleyball and only 0.08 separated those two teams. Women's basketball achieved a 3.60 and volleyball reached a 3.52.

Rising senior Morgan Briggs of volleyball spoke to that academic competitiveness in the department. "Lake Erie College has become a stomping ground for students to excel. The opporunity for a high quality education while participating in college volleyball is something I value very much. We strive for greatness in the classroom and in our sport every day. A common drive for our success in academics has created a strong group of competitors. I feel supported and motivated by our coaches, administrators and professors to be the very best I can be in all aspects of my life while I'm working towards graduation.
