Storm Rounds Out Track and Field/Cross Country Staff

PAINESVILLE, OH – The Lake Erie College Track and Field program has added two coaches to their staff. Megan Smith will focus on coaching Cross Country/Distance runners. Derek Stout will be the Track and Field Graduate Assistant Coach with a specialization in Throws.

A native of Eden Prairie, Minn., Smith was a four-year member of the varsity cross country and track and field teams at the University of Minnesota, specializing in the middle distance events on the track. Smith recorded a career-best 6K mark of 23:29 in cross country. On the track, she was the Golden Gophers' top 800 runner during the 2012 season with a career-best mark of 2:11.03.

Head coach Giles Davis said, "I'm so excited to welcome Megan Smith to Storm family. Megan is a tremendous coach with a great insight into developing middle distance and distance runners. Coach (Megan) Smith will be a great mentor and will work tirelessly to help build our cross-country program to a competitive level at the conference and national levels."

In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Smith was a consistent member of the Big Ten Academic Honor Roll and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Minnesota in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology. In 2014, she earned her MBA from Concordia Univsersity.     

Derek Stout, a native of northeast Ohio, returns to G-MAC competition as a former four-year athlete of the varsity track and field team at Walsh University where he specialized in throwing events.

"I'm excited to be adding Derek Stout to the staff as our throws coach," Davis said. "He brings a diverse throwing background that will allow him to mentor student-athletes at a high level in every throwing event. Coach (Derek) Stout has knowledge, energy, and enthusiasm that will allow him to take our current throwers to the next level and recruit high-caliber student-athletes."

Stout recorded top 10 finishes in both the indoor and outdoor Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Championships while competing for the Cavaliers.  Stout earned a B.S in Theological Studies.

The Storm Cross Country team kicks off the 2018 season with the Grove City 5K Kickoff on Saturday, September 1st.
