PAINESVILLE, OHIO – The Lake Erie College cross country teams tuned up for next weekend's All-Ohio Championships by competing with Edinboro University at the Fighting Scots' annual Rag Relay Event in Edinboro, Pa.
The squads are broken up into relay teams, with the women running a 3 x 1,500-meter race – with each runner running three laps at that distance -- and the men a 4 x 1,500-meter relay. Host Edinboro took the top four spots on the women's side and the top five on the men's side in this nontraditional event.
For the Storm women, sophomore Shanita Fluker (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) was the top runner. She finished 13th overall with a time of 17:58. Inclement weather in recent days kept the course wet and the times slower than normal on the Doug Watts Cross Country Course. Fluker was joined by juniors Sammie Smith (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) and Leah Jones (Maple Heights, Ohio/Maple Heights) on the LEC relay team that clocked an overall time of 54:55.
On the men's side, LEC's best relay team was the one of junior Craig Gerber (Fremont, Ohio/Clyde), sophomore Jimmy Hudd (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/Ashland) and junior David Gobrogge (Akron, Ohio/Green) that ran the course in 1:01:49. Gerber was the low runner with a time of 19:29 individually.
The Storm runners head to Cedarville University next Friday, Sept. 30, for the annual All-Ohio Championships meet which will begin at 2:45 p.m.
