Storm Falls to Hillsdale

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College volleyball team faced off against the Hillsdale College Chargers on Saturday (Oct. 7) afternoon at the Osborne Center.

The Storm fell 3-1 (25-16, 14-25, 17-25, 23-25) to the Chargers in a Great Midwest matchup.

Lake Erie started the first set with six of the first eight points. An Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio / Fairfield) ace forced Hillsdale into a timeout with the Storm leads 6-2. The Storm pushed the lead to six before the Chargers slimmed the lead to two. A block by Lexi Lombardo (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Olmsted Falls) allowed the Storm to lead by five before a second Chargers timeout. Lake Erie pulled away down the stretch with a 25-16 set one victory.

The Chargers began the second set with a 6-2 lead as the Storm cut the lead to two at 10-8 on a kill by Crystal Kedroske (Dexter, Mich. / Dexter). Lake Erie forced Hillsdale to call a timeout as Lake Erie continued to chip into the lead. After the timeout, Hillsdale extended the lead and won the second set 25-14.

Lake Erie fell behind in the third set as Hillsdale led by as much as nine. After trailing 15-6, Lake Erie used a 6-2 run, trimming the lead to 17-13. Hillsdale took a 2-1 set advantage with a 25-17 set three win.

The fourth set featured both teams exchanging points with five ties in the beginning of the set. A Thomas kill forced the Chargers into a timeout with a Storm 11-9 lead. Lake Erie exited the timeout with three straight as the Storm led by as many as four. Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) had a kill that forced Hillsdale into a second timeout. Hillsdale regained the lead late in the set and won set four 25-23.

Fisher led the Storm with 11 kills in the match. Courtney Rosebrook (Deshler, Ohio / Patrick Henry) and Lombardo each had nine kills for the Storm. Lombardo had one solo block and four block assists. Brooke Peiffer had eight kills and 17 digs on defense. Hallie Zumack had 21 assists and nine digs while Thomas added 20 assists and nine digs. Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) led all players with 29 digs.

The Storm will participate in the 2017 Midwest Region Crossover in Aurora, Illinois next weekend.
