Boggs Advances to National Championships

(WEST LIBERTY, W.Va.) – For many the wrestling season ended this weekend as teams competed at super regionals, but Lake Erie's Nick Boggs will have one more chance to shine. That's because the Concord native and Riverside product finished third in the region to highlight the Storm's day at the NCAA Division II Super Regional III hosted by West Liberty University.

Boggs, ranked No. 7 in the nation, improved to 30-4 on the season after going 4-1 on the day. He started off with a 12-3 major decision over West Liberty's Josh Cornell and followed up with a 7-3 decision over Ashland's Chance Esmont.

The only setback came to eventual regional champion James Wimer from Findlay in the semifinal as Boggs was defeated by the narrowest of margins at 6-5. The redshirt senior was able to bounce back, however, with a 7-2 decision over Wheeling Jesuit's Dylan Taylor and won the third place match over Tiffin's Beau Minnick to punch his ticket to Cleveland.

Two others wrestled well enough to have an opportunity to join him, but came up just short. Forrest Glogouski picked up a win over Ashland's Luke Wymer 8-0 in a major decision before his first setback to Tyler Warner. In the consolation semis he defeated West Liberty's Steven Slack via pin fall at 2:40, but was defeated in the third place match by Notre Dame's Hunter Bray 9-3.

In the heavyweight division Evan Loughman added to his Division II-leading pin total with his 12th of the season against Ashland's Tristen Weirich in 2:07. After falling in the semis to No. 1 Kameron Teacher, Loughman came from behind in impressive fashion to add a second pin fall on the day and his 13th total against West Liberty's Francesco Borsellino in 3:18. Unfortunately for Loughman he had to face Weirich again as the Eagle grappler made his way through the back draw and defeated Loughman via 7-2 decision.

Elsewhere in action Black Glogoouski finished fifth at 125 after he won a tiebreaker over UIndy's D.J. Smith 6-4. Sean O'Hearon also wrestled for in the fifth place match, but was defeated by Tiffin's Richard Screptock 6-5.

In the team standings Lake Erie finished eighth with a team score of 53.5 in the mix with two other teams within two points of each other for fifth.

Notre Dame won the championship by a narrow 2.5-point margin with 125 points. UIndy scored 122.5, while the Cardinals scored 121.5

Boggs will represent the Storm at the national championships on Friday March 8, and Saturday, March 9.
