#19 Storm Competes at D2 National Championships

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa- The #19 Lake Erie College wrestling team had four individuals take part in the 2018 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships on Friday (March 9) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Eighth-ranked Blake Glogouski (New Paris, Ind. / Fairfield) went 1-2 in his second national tournament appearance at 125 pounds. In his first match of the day, Glogouski fell to seventh-ranked Maleek Williams of Upper Iowa in a 20-8 major decision. He bounced back with a narrow victory over Darek Huff of Adams State. Glogouski advanced to the second consolation round with a 10-8 decision victory in overtime. He was defeated by fourth-ranked Marcus Povlick of McKendree in a 6-1 decision as a part of the second consolation round.

Eleventh-ranked Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) battled into the second consolation round before bowing out of the tournament with a 1-2 record at 184 pounds. Hughes lost his first match of the tournament to ninth-ranked Jeff Reimel of Kutztown, a 15-0 technical fall. He kept his tournament alive with a second period fall against Adams State's Richard Bencomo. In the second consolation round, Hughes was defeated by second-ranked Jordan Murphy of Ashland with a first period fall.

At 165 pounds, eighth-ranked Nick Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) went 0-2 on the first day of the national tournament. Vandermeer was defeated in the first round by second-ranked Christian Smith of Cal Baptist by a 9-6 decision. He was eliminated in the second consolation round by Keegan Driscoll of Wheeling Jesuit in a close 4-3 decision.

Eleventh-ranked Jesse Palser (Mansfield, Ohio / Mansfield) made his first appearance at nationals and went 0-2 on Friday at 197 pounds. In the first round, Palser dropped his opening bout against fifth-ranked Morgan Smith of Simon Fraser in an 8-1 decision. He fell in the first consolation round against Truman's Samuel Reeves as a part of a 3-2 decision.
