Six Place at Fifth Annual Storm Open

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College wrestling team hosted the 5th annual Storm Open at the Osborne Center on Sunday (Dec. 3) afternoon.

Six wrestlers placed for the Storm in the event that featured 228 wrestlers from 21 different schools.

Jesse Palser (Mansfield, Ohio / Mansfield) finished third for the Storm at 197 pounds after going 3-1 on the day. Palser opened the tournament in the second round with a 17-8 major decision over Will Roeshot from Mercyhurst. In the quarterfinal, Palser followed with a 3-2 decision against Ohio's Mason Kroening. Facing John Borst from Virginia Tech, Palser fell by an 8-3 decision in the semifinal. He earned third place with an 11-3 major decision over James Ritchie from Baldwin Wallace.

174-pounder Brendon Winning (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) went 2-2 on Sunday, placing fourth for the Green and White. Winning advanced to the quarterfinals with a 5-3 decision against Davenport's Sam Greco. He solidified his semifinal spot with a first period fall over Colton Carroll of Cleveland State. Winning dropped his semifinal match versus Cody Hughes (Virginia Tech) with a 10-4 decision. He finished fourth after he was on the losing end of a 5-1 decision against American's Connor Allshouse in the third place match.

Eighth-ranked Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) battled back from an opening round defeat to finish fifth in the 184-pound weight class. Hughes was defeated by Ty Bagoly (Clarion) in a 7-5 decision in the opening round. Hughes rallied in his first consolation match with a 17-2 technical fall against Ilyaz Veysalov from Gannon. He followed with a first period fall over Paul Ivy of Notre Dame College in the third consolation round. Hughes punched his ticket to the consolation semifinal with his second straight fall, this time in the second round against Davenport's Levi Sabin. In the consolation semifinal, Hughes defeated Brad Crislip of Gannon with a 16-1 technical fall. Hughes capped his tournament with his third pin of the day, a second period fall on Zach Mattucci of Seton Hill.

141-pounder Sean O'Hearon (Albion, Mich. / -), 165-pounder Nick Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) and 197-pounder Chris Droege (Austintown, Ohio / Austintown-Fitch) all went 2-2 and wrestled into the seventh place match.

Andrew Lieb (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins) and John Siemasz (Livonia, Mich. / -) each won two matches in the 141 and 149 pound weight classes, respectively.

The Storm will return to action at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, Indiana on December 16th and 17th.
