Storm To Host Top 20 Tripleheader (Preview)

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College wrestling team will continue their five match home stand with a tri-match with two teams ranked in the top 25 on Saturday (Jan. 28). The 10th-ranked Storm will host #12 Ashland University and #16 Kutztown University.

"It's fun when you get to host two ranked teams in your own gym," said Storm head Kevin Hoogenboom. "We see the Midwest region teams several times throughout the year so getting to see a very good East Region team in Kutztown is a different look for our team."

Kutztown and Ashland will open the afternoon at 12:00 PM, followed by Lake Erie vs. Ashland at 1:45 PM. The final match of the day will be Lake Erie vs. Kutztown at 3:30 PM.

Storm Report: The Storm is 0-3 in duals following a 25-19 loss to sixth-ranked Notre Dame College last Friday (Jan. 20). Lake Erie got an early 9-0 lead on the Falcons prior to the dual coming down to the final match for the third time this season.

"Each week someone different has stepped up and we are excited to see how the team responds to tough competition this weekend. All three of the duals will be highly competitive and could come down to the end. We are used to that with how the duals have gone so far."

Team Rankings: In the rankings released by the Division II coaches on Thursday (Jan. 26), the Storm was ranked 10th in the tournament rankings.

Individual Rankings: In the coaches' rankings, three Storm wrestlers found themselves ranked in the top 12 nationally. 149-pounder Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) was ranked third in the country. 165-pounder Nick Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) was ranked sixth. At 184 pounds, Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) was ranked sixth. In Super Region Two, nine different wrestlers were ranked in the top eight of the region.

Series History: The Storm defeated Ashland 22-15 last season, as the Storm have a 4-3 series advantage. Lake Erie faced Kutztown during the 2014-15 season. The teams split the season series with one win each.

Storm Forecast: Lake Erie will host #24 Tiffin at the Osborne Center on Friday (Feb. 3).
