#15 Storm Drops Close Battle With #8 Mountain Cats

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – In the first duel of the 2016-17 season, the #15 Lake Erie College Storm wrestling team dropped a close back-and-forth battle with the #8 University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown Mountain Cats 22-21 on Friday night.
The teams exchanged the lead throughout the night before the Mountain Cats clinched the victory in the final match of the night.
In the opening match at 125 pounds, Blake Glogouski (New Paris, Ind. / Fairfield) fell behind early against Zeke Beatty after two early takedowns. Glogouski pulled within two points in the second period before falling by a 11-6 decision.
Lake Erie gained a 6-3 lead in the match after Andrew Lieb (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins) pinned Tanner Cahill in the second round of the 133 pound matchup.
Pitt-Johnstown took the 141 pound match by forfeit but the Storm responded with another pinfall in the 149 pound weight class. #6 Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) took control of the match in the second period against Corey Falleroni and went on to pin Falleroni at the 4:48 mark of the match.
The Mountain Cats took a 13-12 lead after a major decision at 157 pounds. Christian Baughman (Wadsworth, Ohio / Wadsworth) fell to #2 Cody Law by a 24-12 major decision.
#9 Nick Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) held off a third period rally by Steve Edwards at 165 pounds en route to a 12-10 decision. #11 John Blankenship won the 174 pound weight class following a Lake Erie injury default. The injury default set up the Mountain Cats with a 19-15 lead with three matches to go.
#8 Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) started a run with two straight Storm victories by decision. Hughes defeated Levi Niebauer with a 5-4 decision at 184 pounds. #12 Evan Rosborough (Concord Township, Ohio / Riverside) followed with a 9-3 decision over Nico Pecora at 197 pounds. Lake Erie led 21-19 going to the final match at heavyweight.
Evan Loughman (Thornville, Ohio / Sheridan) fell behind #11 D.J. Sims in the first period and could not seal the Storm victory. Sims won the match with a 7-3 decision and the Mountain Cats won the duel 22-21.
The Storm will host Wheeling Jesuit University in a duel on Sunday January 15th. The match starts at 2:00 PM.
