PAINESVILLE, Ohio- After participating on the road for the first three weeks of the season, the Lake Erie College Storm wrestling team wrestled at home for the first time this year as a part of the Storm Open.
The Storm Open featured over 200 wrestlers from 17 different Division I, II and III schools.
Lake Erie had a great showing for their first home meet. Nine wrestlers placed in the top four to their respective weight classes.
197-pounder Evan Rosborough (Concord Township, Ohio / Riverside) won his weight class after a 4-0 day. In the first round, Rosborough pinned Gannon's Gunner Loughman in the first round. He followed up his first round with first round pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Rosborough won the weight class by a medical forfeit in the finals.
157-pounder Conner Nemec (Mantua, Ohio / Crestwood) was one of two Storm wrestlers to finish second. Nemec opened the day with a first round bye. In the second round, Nemec defeated Baldwin Wallace's Nicholas Sbrocco with a 6-1 decision. Facing Gannon's Teagan O'Sullivan in the quarterfinals, Nemec earned a spot in the semis with a 7-1 decision. He defeated Kent State's Richard Jackson with a 5-2 decision. Virginia Tech's KT Forsythe defeated Nemec with a 5-3 decision in the final round.
184-pounder Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) finished second in his weight class with three wins on the day. He began the day with a bye and then a 4-3 decision win over Nate Starkey of Wheeling Jesuit. In the quarterfinal, he beat Jake Walker from Ohio University on a 4-1 decision. Hughes faced his teammate Brendan Winning in the semifinal, winning by a 4-1 decision. Nick Corba (Cleveland State) beat Hughes in the finals with a 5-0 decision.
149-pounder Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) won four matches en route to a third place finish in his weight class. Boggs began the day with a 14-5 major decision against Cleveland State's Sam Matzek. He followed with a technical fall versus Alex Forrest of Mercyhurst in the second round. Against Wheeling Jesuit's Skyler Terrell in the quarterfinal, Boggs won with a 13-5 major decision. Boggs fell to another Wheeling Jesuit wrestler, Dominick Nania, in the semis by a 4-1 decision. In the third place match, Boggs won by an injury default.
165-pounder Nick Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich / Clarkston) had a bye in the first round before he faced Wheeling Jesuit's Cody Egger in the second round. Vandermeer defeated Eggers by a 17-0 technical fall. He dispatched Anthony Williamson of Gannon with an 11-7 decision victory. In the semifinal, Vandermeer fell against Elijah Cleary by a 7-1 decision. He pinned Ohio's Grayson Davis in the third place match, clinching third place.
184-pounder Brendan Winning (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) won three of his four matches, finishing third on the day. In the second round, Winning won via a 13-4 major decision over Notre Dame College's Tony Vezzetti. Winning pinned Cleveland State's Colton Carroll in the first round of the quarterfinal matchup. His teammate Tyler Hughes defeated him with a 4-1 decision in the semis before Winning won the third place match via forfeit.
133-pounder Andrew Lieb (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins) went 2-2 on the day to go along with a fourth place finish. Lieb won with a 16-0 technical fall in the second round against American's James Giaccia. In the quarterfinals, Lieb pinned Jarrod Ganger from Notre Dame College in the second round. He fell to Ohio State's Mario Guillen via fall in the semifinals. Lieb finished fourth after he fell in the third place match with a 3-2 decision against Dustin Warner (Wheeling Jesuit).
174-pounder Jesse Palser (Mansfield, Ohio / Mansfield) won his first two matches of the day with pins. In the quarterfinals, Palser defeated Virginia Tech's Cody Hughes with a 5-3 decision. Cleveland State's Devon Pingel won via a tie breaker in the semifinals before Palser had an injury default in the third place match.
Heavyweight Zach Wood (Clarkston, Mich. / Oxford / Limestone) was 2-2 on Saturday, earning a fourth place finish. Wood defeated David Tooley of Davenport University with a 5-2 decision in the second round. After a win by injury default in the quarterfinals, Wood dropped his final two matches via fall.
Josh Davis (Haubstadt, Ind. / F.S. Reitz), Josh Pappas (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake), and Evan Loughman (Thornville, Ohio / Sheridan) all earned wins on the day.
The Storm will return to action at the Midwest Classic on December 17-18th.
