Storm Nets Several Top Finishes at Findlay Open

FINDLAY, Ohio—The Lake Erie College wrestling team continued the early portion of their 2015-16 schedule at the University of Findlay Open Saturday (Nov. 21).

174-pounder Nicholas Vandermeer (Clarkston, Ohio/Clarkston) won by tech fall against Riley Tercha in the first round.  In round two, he pinned Andrew Wood of Gannon University in the opening frame.  In the quarterfinals, Vandermeer picked up his second pinfall of the day, this time over Emilio Fowler of Notre Dame College in the second period. Vandermeer fell to Myles Martin of Ohio State University in the semifinals but placed third due to a medical forfeit.

After receiving a bye in the opening round, top-ranked 165-pounder Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) picked up a major decision, 12-2, over Peyton Geary of Wheeling Jesuit University.  In the quarterfinals, Vandermeer picked up a hard fought 8-6 overtime win over Jared Walker of Kent State to advance to the semifinals. Vandermeer fell in the semifinals to Nic Skoniwczny of Findlay to finish in fourth.

184-pounder Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) opened the tournament with a 8-0 major decision over Jimmy Suhayda of John Carroll.  In the second round, he bested Jared Chambers of Tiffin University 5-1.  Hughes fell in the quarterfinals but rebounded with 12-2 major decision in the consolation round.  Hughes received the consolation semifinal victory via medical forfeit to reach the fifth-place match, where he picked up the win over Gabe Dzuro of Ohio University.

Evan Rosborough (Concord, Twp., Ohio/Riverside) opened up with a pin against Isen Vajusi of John Carroll in the second period. Rosborough fell to Kollin Moore of Ohio State in the quarterfinals but regained his composure with 17-1 tech fall over Russ Porter of John Carroll.  In the consolation semifinals, Rosborough picked up a 10-8 decision over Tyler Mattison of Merchyhurst NorthEast to reach the fifth-place match.  In the fifth-place match, Rosborough pinned Gannon University's Ryan Moore in the opening period.

Christian Baughman (Wadsdworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) opened up the 157-pound bracket with a 16-4 major decision over Alex Sepeda of Ohio State.  In the second round, Baughman fell behind early but fought back to pick up a 10-8 decision over Garret Smith of Gannon.  After falling in sudden victory in the quarterfinals, Baughman bounced back with a 10-6 decision over Kyle Kaminski of Ohio University.  In the consolation semifinals, Baughman defeated Ben Heyob of Kent State University by major decision, 14-4.  In the fifth-place match, Baughman fell to Dan Mirman of John Carroll University by decision.

Heavyweight Evan Loughman (Thornville, Ohio/Sheridan) won his opening round by decision, 7-2, over Logan Rimmer of Notre Dame College.  After falling in the second round to Parker Knapp of Ohio State, Loughman rebounded with a 19-10 major decision in the consolation bracket.  However, Laughman lost in the third round of consolations to Zack Parker of Ohio.

Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) defeated Jacob Spino of Kent State University in his opening 149-pound bout by major decision, 16-6.  In the second round, he faced another Golden Flash, defeating Tim Rooney by decision, 3-2.  However, Boggs fell in his last two rounds.

Hunter Turner (North Branch, Mich./North Branch) won his opening 157-pound match by major decision, 9-0, over Teagan O'Sullivan of Gannon.

The Storm is back action Dec. 19-20 at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis.
