Matt Vandermeer Advances to Semifinals of NCAA Championships

ST. LOUIS, Mo.— Matt Vandermeer went 2-0 on day one of the NCAA Division-II Wrestling Championships Friday (March 13) to advance to day two on Saturday (March 14). 

Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston), an All-American, was victorious in his first round 165-pound match against Austin Harris of Western Colorado State University, picking up an 8-2 decision.  In the quarterfinals, Vandermeer picked up a 5-0 decision over Cody Quinn of Minnesota State Mankato.  Vandermeer guaranteed All-American honors for the second time.  He will face Devin Aguirre of Nebraska Kearney in the semifinals Saturday morning.

Zak Vargo fell in his opening match to Frank Cagniga of Central Missouri in the opening round of the 149-pound bracket.  Vargo rebounded with a 5-4 decision over Reis Humphrey of New Mexico Highlands.  However, Vargo fell in the next consolation match.  He ends his Lake Erie career as the program's leader in wins.

Evan Rosborough (Concord Twp., Ohio/Riverside) fell in his opening 197-pound match to top-ranked Romero Cotton of Nebraska Kearney.  In the consolation bracket, Rosborough pinned Chris Di Iorio of LIU Post in the third round.  However, Rosborough fell in his second consolation match. 

Nicholas Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) and Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) went 0-2 at 174- and 184-pounds, respectfully, in their first trips to the Championships.
