Storm Wins Five-of-Nine Bouts but Falls at Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa.—The eighth-ranked Lake Erie College wrestling team won five-of-nine contested bouts but were unable to overcome 14th-ranked Kutztown University, falling 21-16 Saturday (Feb. 7).

The dual started at 133-pound after the Storm forfeited 125-pounds.  Ian Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) picked up a 2-1 decision win over Travis Roper to cut the overall lead to 6-3. 

At 141-pounds, Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) tied the dual at six with a 4-1 decision victory over Matt Benvenuto.

Chayse Csongedi (Parma, Ohio/Parma) gave the Storm a 10-6 lead with a 9-1 major decision over Trent Clifford at 149-pounds.

Kutztown cut the Storm's lead to one when Matt Martoccio defeated Christian Baughman (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) 10-8 at 157-pounds.

Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) gave the Storm a four point lead with a 4-2 win in sudden victory over Bo Candelaria.

Once again, Kutztown brought the lead to one when Ryan Krecker defeated Nicholas Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) 4-2.

At 184-pounds Kutztown's Andre Petroski defeated Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville), 5-2, to give them a 5-2 lead.

Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) picked up a point of riding time to defeat Brandon Clark 3-2 at 197-pounds to give the Storm a 16-15 lead heading into the final match.

In the heavyweight bout, top-ranked Ziad Haddad pinned Noah Hosking (Milford, Mich./Milford) to give Kutztown the victory.

The Storm is back in action Friday (Feb. 13) at the University of Findlay as they compete for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship.
