PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The Lake Erie College wrestling team fell to fifth-ranked Mercyhurst University, 29-9, Saturday (Jan. 3) in Painesville.
The dual started at 125-pounds, with Ian Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) facing sixth-ranked Willie Bohince. After a scoreless first period, Ross scored the first point on an escape late in the second. Bohince tied the match with an escape in the third but Ross was able to keep him down long enough to negate the riding time advantage to send the match into overtime. After a scoreless first overtime, Bohince picked up two points for the 3-1 decision win.
After a forfeit at 133-pounds, Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) took on Kody Young. After a scoreless first, Boggs scored a takedown in the second but Young escaped late. Young escaped a second time at the beginning of the third period to tie the bout. After Young took Boggs down, Boggs scored a reversal and a near fall to win, 7-4.
Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) faced fifth-ranked Jeremy Landowski at 149-pounds in his first match of the season. Landowski scored the first point of the bout with an escape in the second period. Vargo tied it with his own escape in the third period. He then secured a takedown to take a 3-1 before Landowski scored an escape to cut Vargo's advantage to one but Vargo held on late to pick up the 3-2 decision victory.
Justin Smith (Canael Fulton, Ohio/Northwest) scored two takedowns early on against Michael Griffith but Giriffith was able to tie it with a reversal and a near fall at 157-pounds. After back-and-forth action at the end of the first period, Griffith took a 10-7 advantage into the second period. Smith started the second on the bottom and scored a reversal to cut the lead to one. Griffith scored two points on a reversal but Smith was once again able to escape and entered the third period leading 16-10. Griffith held on in the third for an 18-10 major decision.
Alec Mills (Columbus, Ohio/Mifflin) fell behind Angelo Burtoluzzi 6-2 in the first period in the 165-pound bout. Burtoluzzi scored a reversal and a takedown in the second period to move ahead 10-3 and closed out the match with a 14-4 major decision.
Dylan Zivcic (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/Lakeland) faced fifth-ranked August Mizia at 174-pounds. Zivcic scored the first points of the bout in the second period with an escape but Mizia scored a takedown late in the period to gain a 2-1 lead. Mizia picked up a reversal in the third for the 4-1 decision win.
Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) made his season debut against Dakota DesLauriers at 184-pounds. DesLauriers scored the first point of the bout with an escape to start the second period. Green tied it with an escape in the third but DesLauriers picked up the win via riding time, 2-1.
Evan Rosborough (Concrod, Twp., Ohio/Riverside) scored a takedown early on against Brian Beattie at 197-pounds. Beattie tied the bout with a takedown in the second period but Rosborough scored a reversal to regain the lead. Rosborough picked up a point via escape to start the third period and later scored a takedown to pick up the 8-2 decision win.
In the final bout of the dual, Drew Bell (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeland) fell in the first round of the heavyweight contest via pinfall to eighth-ranked Andy Welton.
The Storm is back in action Jan. 9-10, competing at the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind.
