CLEVELAND, Ohio—Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) and Evan Rosborough (Concord Twp., Ohio/Riverside) led the way for the Lake Erie College wrestlers at day one of the NCAA Division II National Championships held at Public Hall in Cleveland.
Vargo won his two bouts of the day to advance to the semifinals of the 157-pound bracket held Saturday (March 15) and his second straight All-American honor- the first two-time All-American wrestler for Lake Erie. 197-pounder Rosborough (Concrod, Twp., Ohio/Riverside) also advanced to day two after finishing the day with two wins and one loss, securing a top-eight finish and becoming Storm wrestling's third All-American.
The two All-American honors marks a first for fourth-year program.
"We progressed forward with two All-Americans," said Storm Head Coach Kevin Hoogenboom. "And we still have a chance to make history with a national champion. We are excited about our program."
In his opening bout, Vargo picked up a decisive 6-0 decision over Derrick Weller of Lindenwood University. Vargo continued to roll in the semifinals against Ray Hall of Colorado State University-Peublo. He scored the first point on an escape in the second round. Vargo then landed a takedown on a shoot from Hall and kept him on the mat for most of the round. In the third round, Vargo maintained control from the top, picking up a riding time point en route to a 4-1 decision and a berth in the semifinals. Vargo will have a rematch with the 2013 National Champion and top-ranked Cory Dauphin of the University of Central Oklahoma in the semifinals Saturday morning.
Rosborough fought past sixth-ranked Brandon Johnson of Notre Dame College in the first round to reach the quarterfinals with a 6-4 decision. He then faced top-ranked Romero Cotton of the University of Nebraska Kearney. Cotton scored the first points on a takedown before Rosborough got the escape. After a scoreless round two, Cotton increased his lead to 3-1 with an escape in the third. Cotton scored one more takedown but once again Rosborough escaped. In the closing seconds, Rosborough landed a takedown but was unable to roll Cotton over, falling 6-4. Rosborough faced Kenny Breaux of Lindenwood in the consolation bracket. Rosborough dominated from start to finish, picking up two near falls in the final frame en route to an 11-2 major decision. He will face seventh-ranked Joe Brandt of Ashland University in his next consolation round Saturday.
141-pounder Dylan Kager (Shalersville, Ohio/Crestwood) and 184-pounder Chevy Farris (Ferndale, Mich./Ferndale) bowed out of the tournament after dropping their two matches.
Farris fell to top-ranked Travis McKillop of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in the opening round to fall into the consolation bracket. In his consolation round against fifth-ranked Nick Burghardt of Maryville University, Farris scored the first points on a takedown. After Burghardt secured an escape and takedown, he kept Farris on the mat the rest of the round. After a scoreless second round, Burghardt finished the match with a pinfall late in the third round. Farris concludes the season with a 14-11 record. Kager narrowly fell in his first round of the day to third-ranked Charles Napier of Fort Hayes State University, placing him in the consolation bracket. The freshman bowed out in the consolation round, falling to seventh-ranked Darick Lapaglia of Maryville by pinfall. Kager finishes the season with a 21-8 record.
Overall, the Storm recorded 13.5 points on the day, placing them in 22nd.
