Lake Erie Coach Kevin Hoogenboom announced his 2012 signing class which includes (l to r): Almonte Patrick, Cobey Fehr and Devin Smith.

PAINESVILLE, OHIO – The third Lake Erie College wrestling recruiting class got off to a strong start with the announcement of eight student-athletes signing letters of intent during the spring signing period.

"With each year, as our program becomes more established, we attract a larger and higher quality pool of prospective student-athletes," said Head Coach Kevin Hoogenboom.  "I am really please with how this year's class is shaping up.  Our first eight signees are all quality students and strong wrestlers and several of them can make a major impact very early in their careers."

The initial signing class is balanced throughout the 10 weight classes with a strong focus in the lower half, an area where the Storm has lacked depth in its first two seasons.

Lake Erie posted an 8-11 dual meet record in 2011-12, its second varsity season, including a third-place finish in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and a pair of wins over nationally-ranked teams.  The Storm also had its first All-American in freshman 165-pounder Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) and two national qualifiers.

"Our program is definitely trending upwards and I think that the quality of the student-athletes we are recruiting is really starting to show," Hoogenboom added. "There is a lot of potential within this group and we are excited to add these guys to our current roster.  We have been developing a culture here and we believe we have the ability now to take our program to the next level."

Below is information on each of the Storm's eight 2012 signees, as well as comments from Hoogenboom.

Christian Baughman
141/149 lbs. | Fr./Fr.
Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth

PRIOR TO LAKE ERIE: Four-year letterwinner at Wadsworth High School… two-time state qualifier… placed seventh in state at 145 pounds as a senior and was also a first-team all-county and Suburban League individual champion… member of 2010 Division I state championship team… Academic All-Ohio selection.

PERSONAL: Born Nov. 5, 1993… parents are Todd and Alison Baughman… plans to major in business and entrepreneurship.

Coach's Comments: "Christian has a very physical style to which we were drawn.  He has a superior work ethic and comes from a Northeast Ohio wrestling powerhouse at Wadsworth.  We feel that with his effort and dedication, his best wrestling is ahead of him."

Nick Bloch
141/149 lbs. | Fr./Fr.
West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West

PRIOR TO LAKE ERIE: A four-time letter winner and two-time state qualifier at Lakota West High School… twice was a sectional and Greater Miami Conference individual champion and was league's most valuable wrestler as a senior… named second-team All-City Cincinnati in 2012… state runner-up in free style competition… two-time Ohio national team member… finished his high school career with over 100 victories.

PERSONAL: Born July 16, 1993… parents are Brian and Tomiko Bloch… plans to major in biology.

Coach's Comments: "Nick has only been wrestling since seventh grade and he has tremendous upside. In limited exposure to the sport he became a two-time state qualifier and Ohio national team member.  He showed a lot by battling through injuries this past season and still making it to the state tournament."

Cobey Fehr
133/141 lbs. | Fr./Fr.
Barberton, Ohio/Barberton

PRIOR TO LAKE ERIE:  Was a two-time state qualifier at Barberton High School… placed third at the state meet at 126 pounds in 2012… posted over 130 career high school victories.

PERSONAL: Parents are Cobey and Shelly Fehr.

Coach's Comments: "Cobey is solid in every position and his relentless attacks and scrambling ability together make him an immediate threat.  He was only defeated twice during his senior season, and both times by nationally ranked opponents. We expect him to make a smooth transition to college wrestling and be a big part of our program."

Jacob McAdams
157/165 lbs. | Fr./Fr.
Jamestown, Ohio/Greenview

PRIOR TO LAKE ERIE: Four-year letterwinner and three-year team captain at Greeneview High School… was a state qualifier and first-team All-Ohio Heritage Conference selection… finished his career with over 100 victories and was a second-team all-area pick… also played two seasons of football and baseball for the Rams.

PERSONAL: Born Nov. 3, 1993… parents are Melissa and Rudy Brown… undecided on a major.

Coach's Comments: "Jacob was a three-sport standout in high school, displaying his athleticism and versatility. He is also a strong student in the classroom and will add depth to the middle of our lineup."

Almonte Patrick
Heavyweight | Fr./Fr.
Maple Heights, Ohio/Maple Heights

PRIOR TO LAKE ERIE: A four-year letterwinner in wrestling at Maple Heights High School who also excelled at football and in track and field… two-time state qualifier and two-time team most valuable wrestler for the Mustangs… currently holds three school records for most pins in a season and career and most wins in a single season (47)… posted 93 career pins and had a career-record of 158-16… lettered three times in football and started on the offensive line for team that won 2010 state championship and was runner-up in 2009… was an all-league thrower in track.

PERSONAL: Born Oct. 30, 1993… son of Michelle Patrick… plans to major in physical therapy and physical education… a two-sport signee for the Storm, will also play football at Lake Erie.

Coach's Comments: "Almonte has exceptional speed and strength which allows him to make up for some weight he may be giving up to larger heavyweights.  But he will be faster and more athletic than most of his opponents which will make him competitive.  He is a big addition for us with only one returning heavyweight and we expect him to compete for a starting role right away."

BJ Rhodes
133/141 lbs. | Fr./Fr.
Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls

PRIOR TO LAKE ERIE: Four-year letterman at Cuyahoga Falls High School where he also lettered twice in soccer and once in football… was named All-Northeast Ohio Conference honorable mention as a senior… was a member of three conference championship teams.

PERSONAL: Born Nov. 2, 1993… parents are Bob and Carla McMasters… plans to major in physical therapy… has three cousins who play soccer collegiately.

Coach's Comments: "BJ was a three-sport letterwinner in high school, but he has chosen to focus on wrestling in college.  He was a captain multiple seasons and was a strong leader on his team.  We expect him to compete at the lower weights and add depth there."

Devin Smith
184 lbs. | Fr./Fr.
Salem, Va./Salem

PRIOR TO LAKE ERIE: A four-year letterwinner in wrestling and three-year letterwinner in football at Salem High School… qualified for the Virginia state tournament four times and placed three times, including a runner-up finish his senior year… a two-time team captain and regional champion who posted 139 career victories… twice named an All-Times Land Wrestler… was an overtime match away from earning All-American honors at 2012 NHSCA Senior Nationals… was named second-team all-district in football as a senior and helped team to district and regional titles.

PERSONAL: Born July 4, 1993… parents are Asa and April Smith… plans to major in biology.

Coach's Comments: "Devin has wrestled all over the country and had success. He attacks well in the neutral position, which translates well to the collegiate wrestling style.  He is outstanding on the mat and in the classroom and can come in right away and compete for time at 184 pounds."

Jacob White
184/197 lbs. | Fr./Fr.
Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley

PRIOR TO LAKE ERIE: Four-year letterwinner at Tri-Valley High School… twice qualified for district tournament and was named the team's most improved wrestler… served as a team captain two times and helped Scotties to 2012 Muskingum Valley League title… also lettered twice in football and was first-team All-MVL and honorable mention All-District 12… served as National Honor Society president and was a 4-year honors letter recipient.

PERSONAL: Born Oct. 2, 1993… parents are Clint and Cindy White… plans to study pre-veterinary medicine… is an Eagle Scout.

Coach's Comments: "Jacob spent most of his senior season rehabbing an injury, but still came back to compete at the district tournament, showing a lot of heart and determination.  He is a true scholar-athlete and will compete at the higher weights for our team."
