No. 8 Mountain Cats Deal Storm Defeat in Home Finale

PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Eighth-ranked University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown raced out to a 12-0 lead and won seven-of-ten bouts in handing the Lake Erie College wrestling team a 25-9 setback in the Storm's final home match of the season at the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic and Wellness Center.

After dropping the first three matches, two by decision and one by fall, the Storm (6-7) bounced back to take three of the next four contests.  Sophomore 149-pounder Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) got Lake Erie on the board with an 8-4 decision over Nathan Link.  Freshman Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) earned 6-2 win at 165 pounds over Logan Shirley and sophomore Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) defeated Myers Miller 11-5 at 174 pounds to bring the Storm within 16-9.

But the Mountain Cats (8-3) won the last three matches to close out the afternoon and send the Storm to its second straight dual defeat.   

A select group of Storm wrestlers will compete on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the John Suma Invitational at Baldwin-Wallace College.  On Sunday, Feb .5, Lake Erie will compete in the inaugural Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships at Ashland University.
