PAINESVILLE, OHIO –  The Lake Erie College wrestling opened the dual portion of his schedule with three matches Saturday (Nov. 19) at the Messiah College Quad in Grantham, Pa.  The Storm posted a 2-1 record on the day, with victories over host Messiah and Waynesburg University.

However, the Storm opened the day with a 29-13 setback against 17th-ranked York College (Pa.). Freshman Nate Ball  (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) picked up a major decision victory at 141 pounds while sophomore Tyler Tesny (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) earned a decision win at 157.  Freshman Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) pinned Jake Siegried in 2:53 at 174 pounds to wrap up the Storm's scoring.

The victory by Vandermeer was the first of three on the day as he was the only Storm wrestler to go 3-0 at the event.

After dropping two lower weight contests, Lake Erie bounced back for a convincing 31-9 win over Waynesburg.  Ball earned his second straight major decision victory.  Dylan Zivcic (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/Lakeland) won a decision at 149 pounds and Vandermeer and sophomore Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) followed with wins at 165 and 174-pounds, respectively.  Then the Storm closed the match in exciting fashion with three consecutive pins in the higher weight classes.  Freshman Jon Schafer (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) pinned Cody Catalina in 1:10 anf 184 to start the streak.  Sophomore Chris Kelly (North Olmsted) took out Daniel Mahon in 2:01 at 197 and freshman Bobby Zappitelli (Painesville Twp., Ohio/Lake Catholic) pinned Martin Kisla one minute into the second round.

The Storm won six of the 10 matches in a closely contested bout against Messiah for a 26-15 win.  Freshman Austin Gillihan (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) earned a major decision at 125 pounds and sophomore Kevin Brunner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) followed with a pin of Matt DelGallo at 133 pounds 33 seconds into the second round.   The two teams alternated victories the rest of the way.  Zivcic, Vandermeer and sophomore Josh Linden (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) earned wins via decision and redshirt freshman Mike Samijlenko (Parma, Ohio/Normandy) pinned Matt Ingalls in the heavyweight bout for six points to give the Storm the 11-point victory.

Lake Erie is idle until after the Thanksgiving holiday break. The Storm will travel to Seton Hill University on Dec. 3.
