PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Led by a narrow upset victory by junior Sam Delpra (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geagua/Heidelberg) over a returning Division II All-American and three pins, the Lake Erie College wrestling team capped an impressive home debut with a 31-14 victory over Seton Hill University Saturday (Dec. 4) in the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic & Wellness Center for the first dual match win in school history.

Freshman Kevin Brunner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake), sophomore Andrew Gasber (Madison, Ohio/Madison) and freshman Chris Kelly (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) all earned victories by fall for the Storm (1-3).
"It was important to get our first win, but it was really special to get it at home," said first-year head coach head coach Kevin Hoogenboom, who notched his first career coaching victory.
After Seton Hill (1-4) All-American Ken Trumbetta earned a technical fall victory at 125 pounds, the Storm rattled off five consecutive victories.
Brunner (5-3) started things off with a pin of Josh Testa one minute into the second period at 133-pounds. Delpra (7-4) followed with a thrilling decision over All-American Dallas Evans at 141-pounds. Delpra led 8-3 late in the match, but Evans mounted a furious rally in the closing seconds to tie it at 8-8 before Delpra was awarded a point for riding time and the upset victory.
"Sam's win was huge for the team and just as big for him, personally," Hoogenboom said. "He's a good wrestler and I think that helped him realize he can go out there and wrestle with anybody. To compete at the national tournament those are the kids we will have to go against and beat."
Freshmen Zach Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) and Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) followed with decision victories at 149 and 157-pounds, respectively, to put the Storm in front 16-5. Vargo improved to 5-3 on the year while Green moved to 7-3.
Gasber (4-2) pinned Gus Mohlhenrich 2:24 into the match at 165 pounds to make it a 22-5 match. Dan Matthews held off Josh Linden (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) 5-4 in riding time at 174-pounds to snap the Storm's five-match streak and close within 22-8.
"Brunner, Gasber and Kelly all wrestled tough and continued to work even when they were ahead to earn extra points for the team," said Hoogenboom. "And Zev Green battled for seven minutes against a good opponent and was aggressive throughout. He brought the things we preach and work on at practice out to the mat today and it paid off."
The 184-pound match went into overtime before Lake Erie freshman Jared Merritt (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) earned a 7-5 decision with a takedown of Josh Voelker seconds into the extra period for his first victory of the season. Kelly (5-4) followed with a pin at 5:32 of Logan Downs at 197-pounds to make it 31-8.
Seton Hill's Ron Oswald earned a fall victory at heavyweight 1:30 into the contest.
In addition, freshman Thomas Buttryn (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood) won an exhibition match at 125-pounds over Stephen Smith with a major decision (14-0).
"We're still young and we have a long way to go, but we are starting to take small steps each week and learn from our mistakes and continue to get better," said Hoogenboom of the first-year program. "But I thought we did a lot of good things today."
The Storm rages on next Saturday, Dec. 11, at Baldwin-Wallace College. The dual match begins at 1 p.m.
