First Half Surge Lifts Storm Over Gannon

ERIE, Pa. – The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team was victorious today over Gannon University, 11-4.  This is the first time in school history the Storm has defeated the Golden Knights, and with the win Lake Erie improved to 2-0 on the season.   

The Storm grabbed an early lead as Anastasia Crawford (Corning, N.Y. / Corning Painted Post East) scored off an assist from Cecilia Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn).  After nearly 12 minutes of scoreless action, the Storm tacked on a second goal when C. Spin scored off an assist from Crawford with just over 14 minutes remaining in the half.  About three minutes later, the Storm scored their third straight goal as Taylor Mathis (Corning, N.Y. / Corning) scored off an assist from C. Spin.  Less than a minute later the Golden Knights stopped the Storm run with a goal.  Lake Erie quickly regained a three goal advantage when Kayla Bohn (Louisville, Ky. / Eastern) found the back of the net off a pass from C. Spin, to give the Storm a 4-1 lead.  Anna Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) gave the Storm a 5-1 edge with just over five minutes remaining in the half as she scored an unassisted goal.  Crawford notched her second goal of the game for the Storm off an assist from Mallory Quiggle (Lewis Center, Ohio / Olentangy) and Lake Erie took a 6-1 lead.  Lake Erie continued to dominate the half as Haley Andersen (Henderson, Nev. / Coronado) found the back of the net off a feed from C. Spin.  The Storm finished the half strong and enter the intermission ahead, 7-1. 

At the half the Storm was led by C. Spin as she had a goal and four assists.  The Storm defense opened the game shutting out the Golden Knights for the first 20 minutes of the half, and only allowed one goal in the half.  The Storm forced 11 Gannon turnovers and snatched 12 ground balls. 

Three minutes into the second half Gannon cut the Storm lead to 7-2 with a goal.  The middle of the second half was 12 minutes of scoreless action before the Storm regained a six goal advantage, when Mathis netted her second goal of the game, with just under 15 minutes remaining in the game.  Three minutes later, the Storm made the score 9-2, and took their largest lead of the game when Crawford scored her third goal of the game off an assist from Breana Moser (Gahanna, Ohio / Gahanna).  Gannon responded with a goal of their own and made the score 9-3, with just over seven minutes remaining in the game.  Less than a minute later the Storm regained their seven goal advantage as Crawford scored off a pass from Quiggle.  Crawford put the Storm up 11-3 with just under five minutes remaining in the game with her fifth goal of the game.  30 seconds later the Golden Knights responded with a goal and made the score, 11-4 in favor of the Storm.  The Storm finished the game strong and won, 11-4. 

The Storm offense was led by Crawford as she had five goals and a draw control in the game.  C. Spin added a goal, four assists, two groundballs and a draw control.  Defensively, the Storm was led by Quiggle as she had three caused turnovers and three groundballs.  Moser added strong defensive play with three draw controls, two groundballs, and a pair of caused turnovers.  As a team the Storm only allowed four goals, and forced Gannon into 20 turnovers.   

In net for the Storm was Harmony Moore (Farmington, N.Y. / Canadaigua Academy), she faced 15 shots, 12 of which were on goal and made eight saves in the game. 

Lake Erie will be back in action when they return home Wednesday (March 15) to take on Ursuline College at 7 p.m.
