Storm Defeats Falcons in Season Opener

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team opened the 2017 season on Sunday (March 5) with a 19-2 win over the Notre Dame College Falcons at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.

The Storm opened the scoring with on an unassisted goal by Taylor Mathis (Corning, N.Y. / Corning) four minutes in. Cecilia Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) followed with two consecutive goals in the next minute. Mathis added two straight goals as the Storm opened a 5-0 lead ten minutes into the game. Kaci Asper (Syracuse, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse / Onondaga) began a spurt where Lake Erie scored three goals within a minute span. Mathis and Mallory Quiggle (Lewis Center, Ohio / Olentangy) each scored after Asper. With 11:54 left in the first half, Anastasia Crawford (Corning, N.Y. / Corning Painted Post East) found the back of the net for the first of her two goals. Lake Erie scored four goals in the final ten minutes of the half. Jacquelynn Ho (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) scored on an assist from Asper. Two minutes later, Anna Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) helped Quiggle score her second goal of the game. Haley Andersen (Henderson, Nev. / Coronado) and Kayla Bohn (Louisville, Ky. / Eastern) rounded out the scoring in the first half. The Storm's defense held the Falcons scoreless in the first half, limiting them to two shots. The Storm led the Falcons 13-0 at halftime.

Mathis began the second half with her fifth goal of the game on a free position shot. Crawford scored her second goal with 23 minutes left. Bohn assisted Quiggle on her third goal of the afternoon with 11:51 left. A. Spin scored before Notre Dame responded with two straight goals. Breana Moser (Gahanna, Ohio / Gahanna) and Alex Butler (Hilton, N.Y. / Hilton Central / Erskine) completed the scoring with goals in the final two minutes.

Eleven different players scored a goal for Lake Erie. Mathis led the Storm with five goals on six shots. Mathis also picked up three groundballs and caused two turnovers. Quiggle scored three goals with one assist. Crawford and C. Spin each added two goals. A. Spin assisted on four goals and had three draw controls.

Moser led the Storm on defense with four groundballs along with four draw controls and a goal. Ho had three groundballs for Lake Erie. As a team, the Storm had nine caused turnovers.

The Storm will return to action on Saturday (March 11) as they travel to face Gannon at 12:00 PM.
