LONG ISLAND, N.Y.— The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team gained an early advantage against Dowling College Saturday (March 29) but was unable to hold on, falling to the Golden Lions 21-5.
Hana Abu-Kwiek (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) got the Storm on the board first with a goal in the opening minute assisted by Samantha Gryba (Okotoks, Alberta/National Sport Academy). Less than a minute later, Gryba netted a goal to make it 2-0 Storm. After Dowling scored two straight to tie it up, Abu-Kwiek scored her second goal to re-establish the lead. However, Dowling went on a 10-0 run to gain control. Mallory Quiggle (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) halted the Golden Lion run with a late first-half goal but the Storm trailed 12-4 at the half.
Dowling continued to roll in the second-half, scoring the first nine goals. Emma Miller (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) added a goal late on a free position shot but it was not enough as the Storm fell.
Abu-Kwiek ended the game with two goals while Miller had one. Gryba tallied two points on a goal and an assist. Ashriel West (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) had five groundballs and five draw controls. Abu-Kwiek had four draw controls and three groundballs. Kayla Bohn (Louisville, Ky./Eastern), Deianira Smith, Breana Moser (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna), Gryba and Miller had one groundball each. Gryba also caused two turnovers.
Katie Holden (Whitby, Ont./Anderson C.V.I.) and Amanda Getto (Medina, Ohio/Medina) combined for 13 saves in goal. In addition to the saves, Getto had two groundballs and Holden had one.
The Storm return home to open up GLIAC play against Ursuline College on Wednesday (April 2).
