Dragons Slip by Storm, 65-59

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team could not pull off a victory as they fell to the Tiffin University Dragons 64-59 on Thursday (Feb. 2) at the Osborne Center. The Storm pulled even in the final two minutes but the Dragons extended the lead late.

Tiffin opened the game with an 8-2 run over the first four minutes of the game before Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) and Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) scored baskets for the Storm. With 4:01 left in the quarter, Lake Erie got a scoring run from Kendall Anderson (Temperance, Mich. / Bedford) and Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor). Anderson scored four points from the free throw line as the Storm cut the lead to five. Three minutes later, Victoria Burdo (Waterville, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) knocked down a three pointer that pulled the Storm within two at 19-17. Tiffin led 24-17 after one quarter.

The Storm began the second quarter on a 7-2 run, that included four points from Dawson. Lake Erie extended the run to 14-2 as the Storm took a 31-26 lead on a layup by Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor). Tiffin rallied to tie the game and take a short lead before Dawson tied it up with a layup. The game was knotted 33-33 at the half.

Dawson led with 12 points in the first half.

Gabor started the third quarter with a three pointer and Chaddock followed with a jumper as the Storm led 38-34. With the Storm down 40-38, Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) made a three pointer for the lead. Jones scored five straight points for the Storm at that point. Tiffin ended the third on a 7-0 run, taking a 51-43 into the fourth quarter.

The Dragons pushed the lead to nine before the Storm started to chip away at the lead. With 5:08 left, Shagovac split a pair of free throws as the Storm cut the lead to one. Thirty seconds later, Dawson gave the Storm the lead with a jumper. Shagovac made two more free throws as that capped a 12-1 Lake Erie run. Down two with 1:43 left, Dawson stepped to the line and tied the game with two free throws. Tiffin ended the game with five straight points en route to a 64-59 win.

Dawson led the Storm with her second double-double of the year. Dawson scored 22 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Dawson made six free throws in the game along with eight field goals.

Gabor added 11 points and six rebounds while Shagovac scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Lake Erie will finish up the week with a home matchup with the Walsh Cavaliers on Saturday (Feb. 4).
