Gabor Reaches 1,000 Points in Storm Loss, 73-59

AMHERST, New York- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team dropped the final game of the year 2016 on Saturday (Dec. 31) to the Daemen Wildcats 73-59.

Junior Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) became the ninth member of the 1,000 point club in the third quarter of the game. Gabor reached 1,000 with a jumper with 4:08 left in the quarter and surpassed the milestone with a free throw four minutes later.

Daemen jumped out to a 6-0 lead with back-to-back threes. The Storm tied the game with six straight points to answer. Dajia Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) gave the Storm an 11-8 lead with three pointer at the halfway point of the first quarter. With Lake Erie down one, Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) scored four straight points. The Storm led 15-12 with 4:08 left in the first. Daemen closed the gap to 21-19 at the end of the first quarter.

The Wildcats opened the second quarter on a 9-3 run before Farrah Benner (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) closed the gap to one with a three pointer. Over the final 3:34 of the first half, Daeman closed the half on a 10-1 run. The Wildcats led 38-28 at the break.

The Storm was led by Chaddock in the first half, who scored six points.  

Gabor scored the first eight points for the Storm in the second half, who cut the lead to five at 41-36. Daemen pushed the lead to ten before the Storm went on a 15-0 run. Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) scored six points on the run while Gabor scored the basket to reach 1,000 points. Victoria Burdo (Waterville, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) gave the Storm a 49-46 lead with a three pointer with 2:19 left in the third. A last second layup ended the third quarter in favor of the Wildcats, 53-52.

Daeman scored the first five points of the fourth, opening a 58-52 lead. Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) cut the lead to four with a layup. Lake Erie continued to chip away at the lead as Shagovac made three straight free throws with five minutes to go. Daeman closed the game on an 11-2 run, snapping the Storm's two game winning streak.

Gabor led the Storm with 15 points overall, with 13 of them coming in the third quarter. Shagovac converted eight of ten free throws on her way to 14 points, along with four assists and four steals. Dawson finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

The Storm will resume GLIAC play with a home game against Ferris State University on January 5th
