Storm Drops GLIAC Opener to Warriors

DETROIT, Mich. – In the opening game of the 2016-17 schedule of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Lake Erie College women's basketball team made a furious fourth quarter rally against the Wayne State University Warriors.

The Storm cut down a ten point lead before falling in the final minutes to the Warriors, 69-67. Lake Erie fell to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the GLIAC.

Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) opened the game with a layup twenty seconds in. The teams traded baskets in the first five minutes of the game before Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) regained the Storm's 9-8 lead with a pair of free throws. Wayne State took a 13-9 lead with a 5-0 run, the largest lead of the first quarter. In the closing seconds of the first quarter, Victoria Burdo (Waterville, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) put the Storm up 16-15 with a three pointer to close the first period.

Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) pushed the Storm's lead to three with a jumper one minute into the second quarter. Wayne State came back to tie the game for the fifth time at 21-21. Gabor answered with a three ball and a 24-21 Storm cushion. Wayne State and Lake Erie tied three more times in the second quarter. The Warriors ended the half on a 5-0 run in the final two minutes, taking a 39-37 lead into the locker room.

Gabor led the Storm with ten points in the first half. The Storm shot 48% (15-31) from the floor in the half along with making three of four three pointers.

The Warriors controlled the first seven minutes of the second half as they opened an 11 point lead. Wayne State started the half on a 12-3 run. Lake Erie began to cut away at the lead as a 7-0 run, coming within four. The Warriors held a 54-47 lead after three quarters.

The lead hit double digits off of a Wayne State three ball in the fourth, 57-47 with 9:33 left. The Storm stormed back with a 13-5 run. Jones split a pair of free throws, coming within one 62-61 with 4:22 left. Dawson gave the Storm a lead with a layup twenty seconds later. A three pointer from Wayne State took back the lead with 2:39 left. A Jones three clawed the Storm within two but that's where the score settled.

Dawson led the Storm with 22 points and she pulled down six rebounds. Gabor scored 20 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds along with five steals. Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) added ten points.

Lake Erie shot 45% (27-60) overall, including 56% in the fourth quarter.

The Storm will return to the court at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Dec. 3).
