Gabor's 18 Points Leads Storm Over Malone, 70-63

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team renewed their series with their former GLIAC and future GMAC foe Malone University on Friday (Nov. 11) in the GLIAC/GMAC Challenge at Lake Erie.

The Storm improved to 1-0 on the season with a 70-63 win over Malone in the nightcap of a doubleheader.

Malone jumped out to an 8-2 lead before classmates Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) and Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) combined for a 6-0 run, tying the game at eight. The Pioneers regained a five point lead with a 7-2 run. Dawson capped another 6-0 run with a layup as the Storm led 16-15 after one quarter.

Over the first five and a half minutes of the second quarter, Gabor opened the frame with eight straight points including a three point play. Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy), Victoria Burdo (Waterville, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) and Sophie Sonneman (Jamestown, Ohio / Greeneview) all added baskets on a 14-2 Storm run, pushing the lead to 13. Malone attempted to close the gap, getting as close as six before the Storm ended the half with a 39-26 lead.

After the Storm opened the second quarter with a large run, Malone returned the favor with a 13-3 spurt as they cut the lead to three. In the final three minutes of the third, Malone regained the 47-46 lead with a layup by Rachel Goddard, part of a 7-0 run. Lake Erie led after three quarters 50-48.

Lake Erie hit ten of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to keep the Pioneers behind. Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) had six points, including four free throws in the final stanza.

Overall, the Storm shot 44% (26-59) from the floor and 16-of-28 from the free throw line.

Gabor led the Storm with 18 points in the game with five rebounds and three assists. Shagovac ended the game with ten points. Dawson finished with nine points and seven boards.

The Storm will return to action on Saturday (Nov. 12) against Davis & Elkins, who defeated Tiffin 78-76 in the first game. Tipoff is at 2:00 PM for the final game of the GLIAC/GMAC Challenge.
