Storm Ties School Scoring Mark in 101-70 Win Over Midway

PAINESVILLE, OHIO - Junior Alyssa Wagers (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) and sophomore Stephanie Rogers (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) each recorded a double-double and the Lake Erie College women's basketball team tied a school single-game scoring record in a 101-70 victory over Midway College at the Ohio Dominican University Classic in Columbus on Saturday (Dec. 5).

Wagers scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Rogers scored 18 points and led all players with 14 rebounds. The duo combined to go 16-of-26 from the floor, dominating the paint.

For Wagers it was her third double-double of the season and 25th of her career while Rogers picked one up for the second straight game and sixth time overall. Midway led 5-4 1:05 into the game before the Storm (5-4) went on a 22-6 run over the next seven minutes to take a 26-11 lead on a Wagers lay-up.

Midway (3-8) closed within seven at 28-21, but Lake Erie responded with back-to-back threes by senior Renese Ames (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford) and junior Brittany Zele (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) to push the lead back up to double-digits.

The Storm led by 11, 44-33, at halftime, but Midway opened the second half by cutting the lead to six with 17:13 left.

That's when Lake Erie pulled away. Rogers hit two jumpers sandwiched around a Wagers three-point play and the Storm quickly had an 11-point edge with 16:18 left. Another Wagers three-point play, this time with just over 10 minutes to go, pushed the margin to 18.

The lead grew to as many as 33 with 33 seconds to go as the Storm shot an impressive 58.8 percent (20-of-34) from the field in the second half.

Overall, Lake Erie hit on 54.2%- the first time this season the Storm shot better than 50% in a game. And for the second straight game Lake Erie had five players reach double figures.

In addition to Wagers and Rogers, sophomore Jen Caiola (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) scored 16 points and sophomore Liz Stephens (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) added a career-high 13 points off the bench, going a perfect four-of-four from the field and hitting all five free throws. Ames chipped in with 10 points and led the squad with four assists.

Midway, which shot just 33.8% (24-of-71) was led by Jackie Hicks' 12 points. Whitney Odom added 10.

The 101 points scored by the Storm tie the school mark set Feb. 16, 2008 in a 101-66 win over Mount Aloysius. In the last two games, Lake Erie has outscored its opponents 189-110.

The Storm has a week off until traveling to Mansfield, Pa. for the Mansfield University Comfort Inn Classic Dec. 11-12. Lake Erie will face host Mansfield on Friday night.
