Lake Erie Unable to Penetrate Knights' Armor

ERIE, Pa. (December 6, 2008) - Lake Erie College’s defense produced strong opening minutes in both halves of Saturday’s road contest at Gannon University as the Storm lost 104-64. The green and white began the game trading points with the hosts, tallying its first score on a layup by sophomore forward Alyssa Wagers (Stow, Ohio/Stow) to tie the game at two. Then a steal off the inbounds pass by Stephanie Rogers (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) followed by a layup gave Lake Erie the lead two minutes into the game. Both teams battled back and forth for the next few minutes until the Storm’s offense stalled at six, allowing the Golden Knights to take a seven-point lead at the 14-minute mark. A 3-pointer by freshman forward Jen Caiola (South Russell, Ohio/Chagrin Falls), a jumper by freshman Liz Stephens (North Royalton, North Royalton) and two free throws by Rogers pulled the Storm within striking distance at 14-13 with 13:15 on the clock. Gannon then went on a 15-4 run before going ahead 51-30 to end the half.

Trailing by 21 to begin the second period, Lake Erie again started strong, relying on its defense to make up some ground. The Storm forced Gannon into three turnovers and three full minutes without scoring, while Lake Erie scored 13 points to go down by 12 at 55-43 with 15:31 to play. Lake Erie would never get any closer due to its cold shooting from the floor, despite posting one of its best free throw performances of the season. The Storm ended the game shooting 71-percent from the line, going 25-for-35 and just 30-percent from the field at 18-for-61. The Storm forced Gannon into 20 turnovers for the game.

Rogers scored 16 points and had five rebounds, three steals and two blocks to lead the Storm. Wagers had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds and Caiola chipped in 10 points.
