Softball Splits Against Battlers

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College Storm softball team split with the Alderson Broaddus Battlers in their home opener of the 2019 season, making their record 6-10 overall, with a Great Midwest Athletic Conference of 2-4.

The Battlers blanked the Storm in the first game, with a final score of 3-0. Storm senior Allyson Deemer started in the circle, and both teams had a no-hitter going into the top of the fifth inning until four defensive blunders scored three Battler runs. Deemer pitched a complete game and threw 66 strikes in 88 pitches. The loss makes her record 2-6.

The second game was more lively. With Storm pitcher Hayley Dix in the circle, the Battlers struck first, taking a two-run lead by the third inning. Parker Viele came to pitch in relief in the third inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Taylor Phillips led off with a walk and was scored on a two-run home run to left center by Kaitlin Peacock. Cheyanne Hamel reached first on an error, and Megan Smith doubled to center field putting runners on first and third. Kristin Peacock singled to left, scoring both Hamel and Smith. The final run of the inning was scored when Peyton Brownlee hit an RBI single, putting the Storm up 5-2.

The win makes Viele 3-2, allowing one run on three hits and earning five strikeouts in five innings pitched.

The Storm returns to their home field on Tuesday, Mar. 26 for a non-conference matchup against Mercyhurst University. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
