Storm Clinches GMAC Berth in a Split with Senators

ELKINS, W.V. – The Lake Erie College softball team was in action today as they split their double header with Davis and Elkins.  The Storm fell 5-2 in game one, but bounced back to win game two, 8-0 in six innings.

The game two win clinched the Storm's berth into the Great Midwest Athletic Conference playoffs.  This is the first postseason appearance for the softball program since joining Division- II.

Head Coach Rebecca Dyer said, "I couldn't be more proud of the team for finishing the season strong as we won six of the final seven games to clinch our postseason berth".

The Senators grabbed a 1-0 lead, with a run in the first inning.  After a scoreless second and third inning, the Storm scored a pair of runs in the fourth.  The Storm got the inning rolling when Jennifer Doershuk (Streesboro, Ohio / Kent Roosevelt) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a single from Taylor Phillips (Ontario, Canada / John F. Ross).  The Storm loaded the bases as Kristin Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) reached on an error, and the next batter up Kaitlyn Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) singled up the middle and plated both Doershuk and Phillips, to give Lake Erie a 2-1 edge.  After a scoreless fifth inning, the Senators tacked on four runs, and took a 5-2 advantage.  The Storm was unable to muster a rally, and fell 5-2 in game one.

The Storm jumped out to a three run lead in the first as Payton Brownlee (Newark, Ohio / Granville) and Marissa Rizzo (Northfield Center, Ohio / Nordonia) each singled to lead off the game.  The next batter up Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) hit a three run homerun to right field.  The Storm added a pair of runs to their lead in the second as Arial Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) led off the inning with a walk, and then Kr. Peacock singled to give Lake Erie runners at first and second.  The next batter up Ka. Peacock advanced the runners to second and third and a Brownlee singled scored both Birtley and Kr. Peacock.  The Storm added to their lead in the third as Doershuk led off the inning with a single and moved to second when Phillips reached on an error.  The next batter up Kr. Peacock singled and plated Doershuk, and then Ka. Peacock doubled down the left field line to drive in Phillips, to give Lake Erie a 7-0 edge.  After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, the Storm made the score 8-0 when Allyson Hajnosz (Lordstown, Ohio / Lordstown) singled to drive in Brownlee, who singled earlier in the inning.  Allyson Deemer (Poland, Ohio / Poland Seminary) was in the circle for the Storm as she pitched a perfect sixth inning and earned her eighth win on the season.  Deemer pitched a complete game shutout, as she allowed only three hits, and struck out three.

Coach Dyer concluded, "We have a group of determined seniors leading our team, and we couldn't be more excited to be making our first post season appearance."

Lake Erie College will be back in action Thursday (May 3) when they play in the first round of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament.
