Storm Sweeps Arrows

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College softball team was in action today as they swept Ursuline.  The Storm won game one, 1-0 and took game two, 4-2.

The first game started as a pitcher's duel.  Allyson Deemer (Poland, Ohio / Poland Seminary) was in the circle for the Storm as she only allowed three hits in the first five innings.  The Storm broke the scoring drought in the fifth when Kaitlyn Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) led off the inning with a double.  She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Marissa Rizzo (Northfield Center, Ohio / Nordonia) and was driven in by a Payton Brownlee (Newark, Ohio / Granville) bunt single.  Deemer closed the door in the sixth and the seventh to propel the Storm to a 1-0 win.  Deemer dealt a three hit shutout, and earned her fifth win of the season.

The Arrows jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.  After a scoreless second inning, Ursuline tacked on a run in the third and grabbed a 2-0 lead.  The Storm responded in the bottom of the fourth as they scored four runs.  Taylor Phillips (Ontario, Canada / John F. Ross) led off the inning with a single, and later in the inning Alyssa Johnson (Wickliffe, Ohio / Wickliffe) singled to give the Storm runners on first and second.  The next batter up Ka. Peacock singled and loaded the bases, and a Rizzo ground out, scored Phillips.  The next batter up Brownlee singled to score Johnson, and then a double by Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) drove in both Ka. Peacock and Brownlee, which gave the Storm a 4-2 advantage.  Deemer pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Ashley Brown (Dayton, Ohio / Carlisle) and recorded her first save of the season.  Brown started and pitched five innings, as she allowed one earned run on five hits, while striking out two batters.

Lake Erie will return to the diamond Friday (April 13) when they travel to take on Ohio Valley with the game set to start at 2 p.m.
