CANTON, Ohio – The Lake Erie College softball team was in action today as they swept Malone in their double header. The Storm won game one, 7-0 and took game two, 8-6 in extra innings.
The Storm jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first. Kristin Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) led off the inning with a walk. After a Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) walk, Allyson Hajnosz (Lordstown, Ohio / Lordstown) drove in Kr. Peacock and S. Karako scored when Darrian Yanek (Youngstown, Ohio / South Range) reached on an error, to give the Storm a 2-0 lead. After a scoreless second inning the Storm tacked on a run when Kaylie Lewis (Sebring, Ohio / West Branch) singed and drove in S. Karako. Later in the third inning Arial Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) singled up the middle and plated Elizabeth Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) to give Lake Erie a 4-0 lead. The Storm added to their lead in the sixth when Birtley singled to lead off the inning. The next batter up Kaitlyn Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) tripled to right field and drove home Birtley. Kr. Peacock then singled to plate Ka. Peacock and Lake Erie took a 6-0 advantage. Lake Erie took a 7-0 in the seventh when Ka. Peacock singled to left and plated Yanek. The Storm held on to win the game, 7-0. Allyson Deemer (Poland, Ohio / Poland Seminary) was in the circle for the Storm in game one as she pitched a complete game shutout and received the win. Deemer allowed only four hits and one walk, while striking out six in the game.
In game two, Lake Erie grabbed the early lead when E. Karako singled and drove in S. Karako. The Storm added a pair of runs in the second inning when Kr. Peacock doubled to center field and plated both Ka. Peacock and Yanek, to give the Storm a 3-0 advantage. Lake Erie tacked on a run in the third when Yanek singled to drive in E. Karako. The Pioneers scratched across a run in the third and cut the Storm lead to 4-1. Malone tacked on a second run in the fourth to make the score, 4-2 in favor of the Storm. Lake Erie responded in the fifth when Yanek singled up the middle to plate Skylar Acuna (Redlands, Calif. / Redlands). The next batter up Lewis grounded out but was able to drive in Hajnosz, and give the Storm a 6-2 lead. The Pioneers responded with a run in the fifth to make the score, 6-3 heading into the sixth inning. The Pioneers tacked on three runs in the sixth and tied the game at 6-6. After a scoreless seventh inning the game went into extra innings. The Storm took the lead in the top of the eighth when Birtley was later driven in by a Kr. Peacock sacrifice fly. Lake Erie added a second run in the eighth inning when S. Karako singled home Marissa Rizzo (Northfield Center, Ohio / Nordonia). The Storm held Malone scoreless in the bottom of the eighth and won, 8-6.
Lake Erie will be back in action Friday (April 14) when they host Hillsdale College.
