Storm Splits with Eagles

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College softball team was in action today as they split their double header with Ashland.  They fell in game one, 4-3 before bouncing back to take game two, 7-5. 

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first with a pair of runs.  The Storm quickly responded when Marissa Rizzo (Northfield Center, Ohio / Nordonia) was hit by a pitch and was driven in by Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) as she singled down the right field line, to make the score 2-1 in favor of Ashland.  After a scoreless second inning, the Eagles tacked on two in the third and took a 4-1 lead.  Lake Erie responded when S. Karako singled and drove in both Kristin Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) and Rizzo who each singled to left earlier in the inning.  The Storm threatened in the bottom of the seventh but fell, 4-3 in game one.

In game two, Ashland jumped out to the lead in the first with a solo homerun.  The Storm answered in the top of the second when Darrian Yanek (Youngstown, Ohio / South Range) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Elizabeth Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) to tie the game at one.  Lake Erie tacked a pair of runs in the third when S. Karako doubled to left to plate both Kr. Peacock and Rizzo, to give the Storm a 3-1 advantage.  The Eagles responded with a three run fifth to take a 4-3 lead into the sixth inning.   Lake Erie regained the lead in the top of the seventh when E. Karako singled up the middle to drive home both Kr. Peacock and Rizzo.  Later in the inning, Yanek hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate S. Karako.  A couple batters later, Arial Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) singled and drove home E. Karako to give the Storm a 7-4 advantage.  The Eagles scratched across a run in the bottom of the seventh but the Storm held on to win, 7-5.    

Lake Erie will be back in action Sunday (April 9) when they host Ohio Dominican with the game set to start at 12 p.m.
