Storm Drop a Pair in Virginia

SALEM, Va. – The Lake Erie College softball team was in action today as they fell in both games of their double header.  The Storm lost to Fairmont St. 5-2, and in the second game they fell to Salem International, 3-2.   

The Storm opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Kate-Lynn Urgo (Vermillion, Ohio / Vermillion) hit a leadoff single and was driven in when Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) doubled to left field to give the Storm a 1-0 advantage.  After a scoreless second inning the Fighting Falcons tied the game with a run in the third.  The Fighting Falcons added two in the fifth, and took a 3-1 lead.  The Storm answered with a run in the sixth when Allyson Hajnosz (Lordstown, Ohio / Lordstown) and Nicole Grimmett (Hillard, Ohio / Hillard Bradley) hit back to back doubles, with Grimmett's double driving home Hajnosz.  The Fighting Falcons added two runs in the seventh and defeated the Storm, 5-2. 

The Storm scored first in the second game as Jennifer Doershuk (Streesboro, Ohio / Kent Roosevelt) walked to start the second inning.  Grimmett singled to center field to put runners on first and second, before Lindsey Valvoda (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) reached base and drove in Doershuk.  Arial Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) was the next batter and she singled home Grimmett to give the Storm a 2-0 advantage.  Hannah Shevenell (Madera, Calif. / Liberty) had a one hitter through three innings and shutout the Tigers through five innings.  The Tigers scored three in the bottom of the sixth and were able to hold on to win, 3-2 over the Storm. 

Shevenell was in the circle in game two for the Storm and she pitched a complete game.  Shevenell allowed three runs on four hits.  Shevenell struck out a career high nine batters in six innings pitched. 

Lake Erie will be back in action tomorrow as they play two more games in Virginia against Virginia Wise and East Stroudsburg St. at 9 A.M. and 11 A.M. respectively.
