Storm Splits Double Header Against Ferris St.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Lake Erie College softball team split their double header today (April 3rd) against Ferris St. With the split the Storm is now 7-9 on the season and 1-3 in the conference and Ferris St. is now 10-24 overall and 3-3 in conference play. 

The Storm jumped out to an early lead when Kate-Lynn Urgo (Vermillion, Ohio / Vermillion) and Allyson Hajnosz (Lordstown, Ohio / Lordstown) reached on walks, and were driven in by Elizabeth Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) who hit a single up the middle, to give the Storm a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first. Ferris St. answered with three runs to take a 3-2 lead after the first inning.  Hajnosz and Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) each reached base in the fifth, and L. Karako drove them in with a three run homerun, to give the Storm a 5-3 advantage in the fifth.  Ferris St. scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at five runs apiece.  After a leadoff double in the eighth by Hannah Shevenell (Madera, Calif. / Liberty), Darrian Yanek (Youngstown, Ohio / South Range) hit a two run homerun to give the Storm a 7-5 lead.  Later in the inning Urgo reached on a fielder's choice and was later driven in by a double off the bat of Hajnosz, to give the Storm an 8-5 lead.  The Storm held on to win the game, 8-5 in extra innings.         

In game two, Jessacca Gironda (Kent State) lead off the bottom of the first with a triple and Urgo had a bunt single to give the Storm runners on first and third.  Gironda scored and Urgo advanced to third when Hajnosz grounded out.  Urgo was later driven in by L. Karako who singled up the middle, to give the Storm a 2-0 advantage after the first inning.  Ferris St. scored two runs in the third and tied the game at 2-2.  Ferris St. took the lead with eight runs in the fourth inning.  Shevenell reached on an error and was driven in by Lindsay Valvado (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) to cut the Ferris St. lead to 10-3.  Ferris St. maintained its 10-3 lead and won the game.      

On the mound for the Storm in game one was Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio / Brookside) who pitched a complete game, and received her fifth win of the season.  Ondercin allowed five runs, and had four strikeouts in the game.   

Lake Erie will be back in action tomorrow as they will travel to take on Grand Valley St., with the first game of the double header starting at 1 P.M.
