PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Lake Erie College (5-20, 2-8 GLIAC) senior Megan Foley (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) scored the team's lone run in game one following a double and homered in both runs in game two, but the individual effort was not enough as the Storm fell to Tiffin University (15-14, 6-6 GLIAC) 4-1 and 9-2 in a GLIAC South Doubleheader at Paradiso Fields in Tiffin, Ohio.
In game one, the Storm got into trouble early as Tiffin got three straight hits to lead off the bottom of the first and with the benefit of a sacrifice fly and a two-out base hit, plated three runs. They would end up being all the Dragons would need though they added an unearned run in the second inning for a 4-0 advantage. Sophomore starter Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio/Brookside) settled in and did not allow a run the rest of the way. She worked a complete game allowing 10 hits but no walks with three strikeouts.
For the second straight day, Lake Erie struggled to generate offense against Tiffin's Amber Cooksey. The Storm stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the first inning but the middle of its order produced a two-out rally to score in the third as Foley doubled down the left field line and sophomore Juliana Brotzman (Madison, Ohio/Madison). It was the only run Lake Erie would get as Cooksey retired 13 of the final 14 batters including eight straight to end the game.
In game two, Lake Erie jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as sophomore Maddi Klemp (Akron, Ohio/Coventry) led off with a hit for the second straight game and then scored on a two-run home run to left center by Foley. However they were the last base runners Lake Erie would see the rest of the game as Tiffin starter Amber Young retired 20 straight batters, with seven strikeouts over the stretch.
Tiffin took the lead, 3-2, in the third inning as three hits and a costly error produced three runs. A lead off error in the fourth led to another unearned run for the Dragons after a passed ball and two infield singles.
In the sixth inning, Tiffin started hitting senior Sam Ronde (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) hard, putting up three more runs for a 7-2 advantage. Freshman reliever Amanda Anderson (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) came on to work the seventh for the Storm and allowed two runs (one earned).
Ronde worked six innings and allowed 13 hits and seven runs (four earned) with no walks and three strikeouts. The senior was forced into tough spots by five infield errors in the game.
Lake Erie hits the road again Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader at Cedarville University before returning to Painesville for a home doubleheader against Ashland University Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
