PAINESVILLE, OHIO -- The Lake Erie College men's tennis team wrapped up its season on a positive note with a 6-3 nonconference victory over Defiance College Thursday (April 18) outdoors at nearby Thomas W. Harvey High School.
The win snapped a nine-match losing streak for the Storm (2-15, 0-11 GLIAC). Defiance (5-9) lost its second straight.
Lake Erie opened the contest by taking two of the three doubles matches, getting wins from the teams of freshman Liam Goldberg (Melbourne, Australia / Haileybury College) and redshirt freshman Juan Roggia (San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina / Sa Grado Corazon) at first doubles and senior Cory Meek (Madison, Ohio / Madison/Notre Dame) and junior Kyle O'Dell (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) at second doubles. Goldberg and Roggia won their match 8-1 while Meek and O'Dell scored an 8-2 victory over Mike Ross and Craig Bills.
In singles competition, Goldberg, Roggia, O'Dell and freshman Luke Hobbs (Yarm, Englad / Conyers School) all earned straight-set victories. Goldberg didn't yield a game in his match at first singles, defeating Ross 6-0, 6-0.
Roggia picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ryan Nelson at #2, Hobbs bested Bills at #4 6-3, 6-2 and O'Dell defeated Justin Walker 6-4, 6-0 at fifth singles to clinch the victory.
