GREENSBURG, Pa. – The #7 Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team battled the #4 Seton Hill University Griffins on Saturday (April 14) afternoon in the Great Midwest finale for the Storm.
The Griffins defeated the Storm 18-14 in a matchup of the top two teams in the G-MAC.
The Storm opened the scoring with a goal three and a half minutes in as Edmond Renaud (Carlisle, Ont. / Waterdown District / Pfeiffer) scored on an assist from John Kezerian (Melrose, Mass. / Malden Catholic). Seton Hill responded with three straight goals over the next four minutes. With six minutes left in the first quarter, Micah Daigle (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) cut the lead to 3-2 with an unassisted goal. The Griffins rattled off three straight goals as they led 6-2 with 2:58 left in the first period. Renaud broke the Griffins run with an unassisted goal in the closing minute of the quarter. Seton Hill scored with one second left in the first, taking a 7-3 lead after one quarter.
After three minutes of scoreless action, Seton Hill pushed the lead to 11-3 with four goals in a two minute span. Renaud scored from an Austin Bishop (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) assist with eight minutes to go in the first half, making it 11-4 Griffins. Thirty seconds later, Seton Hill scored to keep the advantage at eight goals. Nicholas Tschetter (Hilton, N.Y. / Aquanis Institute) combined with the Renaud-Bishop connection gave the Storm back-to-back goals with four minutes to go in the half. The Griffins beat the buzzer in the second quarter to take a 13-6 lead into halftime.
The Storm started the second half with three consecutive goals in the first four minutes. Renaud scored one goal and assisted on a goal by Daigle. Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) added an unassisted goal in the run. Seton Hill answered with a three goal run of their own as they gained a 16-9 lead with seven minutes left in the third. Bishop and Shafer each scored from an assist by Patrick Bay (Canadaigua, N.Y. / Canadaigua Academy) in the final six minutes. Seton Hill led 16-11 entering the fourth quarter.
The Griffins began the fourth quarter with a goal two minutes in. Just seconds later, Shafer scored a man up goal, assisted by Bishop. With six minutes remaining, Bishop fed Renaud with a feed that found the back of the net. Seton Hill closed the scoring with three minutes left and Lake Erie ended their scoring when Bishop scored on an assist from Renaud under two minutes to go. Seton Hill won the game 18-14.
Renaud had six goals scored and two assists for a total of eight points along with five groundballs. Shafer scored three goals while Bishop scored twice and assisted on four goals with four groundballs. Daigle added two goals and Tschetter scored once.
Reed Hnidy (Saskatoon, Sask. / Genesee CC) led the Storm with six groundballs and four caused turnovers on defense. Mack Fall (Morgantown, W. Va. / University) had two groundballs and two caused turnovers. Tyler Manning (Hamburg, N.Y. / Bishop Timon St. Jude) had three caused turnovers.
The Storm will return to the field next Saturday (April 21) at Mercy, with the game starting at 1:00 PM.
