Second Half Shutout Leads Storm Over Fighting Scots

VIENNA, W.Va. – The seventh ranked Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team was in action today as they defeated Ohio Valley, 18-4.  With the win the Storm improves to 9-1 overall and a perfect 6-0 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference action.   

The Storm opened the scoring just over a minute into the game when John Kezerian (Melrose, Mass. / Malden Catholic) found the back of the net off a feed from Patrick Bay (Canadaigua, N.Y. / Canadaigua Academy).  The Fight Scots responded and tied the game at one goal apiece.  A minute later, Lake Erie regained their lead when Tim Bay (Canadaigua, N.Y. / Canadaigua Academy) scored off an assist by Edmond Renaud (Carlisle, Ont. / Waterdown District / Pfeiffer).  The Storm tacked on a second straight goal when Renaud found the back of the net off an assist by T. Bay.  After seven minutes of scoreless action, Lake Erie made the score 4-1 when Renaud scored an unassisted goal.  11 seconds later, Mack Fall (Morgantown, W. Va. / University) scored off a feed from Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) to give the Storm a 5-1 advantage.  20 seconds later, Shafer scored for the Storm off a feed from James Chadwick (Amherst, N.Y. / Amherst Central).  The Storm made the score 7-1 with just under two minutes remaining in the first half when Chadwick scored off an assist from T. Bay. 

The Lake Erie momentum carried over to the second quarter when Shafer scored off an assist from Micah Daigle (Erie, Pa. / McDowell).  Ohio Valley answered with a goal, and cut the Storm lead to 8-2.  Lake Erie responded two minutes later when Daigle found the back of the net off a feed from Tommy Bischel (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville North).  The Fighting Scots scored the final two goals of the second quarter, but the Storm led, 9-4 at the intermission. 

The Storm came out of the locker room ready to play as they scored three goals throughout the third quarter.  Shafer had two goals in the third quarter, and T. Bay also scored for the Storm.  P. Bay assisted on the first goal of the third quarter and Connor Ward (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) assisted on the final two goals.  The Storm defense blanked the Fighting Scots in the third quarter, and Lake Erie entered the fourth quarter ahead, 12-4. 

The Storm continued to pull away in the fourth quarter as they scored six consecutive goals.  The goals were scored by Neil Gardner (Buffalo, N.Y. / Bishop Timon), Alexander Corbett (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Bishop Timon), P. Bay, Hunter Hays (Plain City, Ohio / St. Francis DeSales), and Ward.  P. Bay, Nicholas Tschetter (Hilton, N.Y. / Aquanis Institute), and Austin Bishop (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) all recorded assists in the final quarter.  The Storm defense completed the second half shutout, and won the game, 18-4

Lake Erie was led by Shafer as he had four goals, and an assist in the game.  12 different members of the Storm added goals to power the offense.  Corbett led the Storm defense as he had three groundballs, and caused turnover in the game. 

Conor Sharkey (Cambridge, Ont. / Jacob Hespeler / Pfieffer) was in net for the Storm, he faced 24 shots, 12 of which were on goal, and made eight saves.  Sharkey pitched a second half shutout for the Storm. 

Lake Erie will return to the field Saturday (April 14) when they travel to take on fourth ranked Seton Hill, with the game set to start at 12 p.m.
