PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team was in action today as they were victorious over Alderson Broaddus, 30-4.
With the win, the Storm improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference action. Lake Erie set multiple school and conference records in the game.
The Storm grabbed the lead when Edmond Renaud (Carlisle, Ont. / Waterdown District / Pfeiffer) scored on the opening possession of the game. Lake Erie tacked on a second consecutive goal when Patrick Bay (Canadaigua, N.Y. / Canadaigua Academy) found the back of the net. Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) added to the Storm lead off an assist from Brandon Donohue ((South Buffalo, N.Y. / Bishop Timon St. Jude) to make the score 3-0. Tim Bay (Canadaigua, N.Y. / Canadaigua Academy) made the score 4-0 off an assist from Donohue with just under 11 minutes remaining in the first quarter. 40 seconds later, the Storm added a fifth straight goal as Renaud found the back of the net. After four minutes of scoreless action, the Storm scored a man up goal as Renaud scored off a feed from Shafer. Lake Erie scored their seventh straight goal as Shafer found the back of the net on an unassisted goal. With 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Lake Erie grabbed an 8-0 lead as P. Bay scored an unassisted goal.
The Storm opened the second quarter a minute and half in as Renaud scored a man up goal. A minute later, the Battlers scored and cut the Storm lead to 9-1. The Storm ended the second quarter with seven straight goals. The goals were scored by Micah Daigle (Erie, Pa. / McDowell), Renaud, Austin Bishop (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg), Shafer, Bay, as the Storm entered the intermission ahead 16-1.
Renaud opened the third quarter with three straight goals in the first five minutes. Connor Ward (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) scored two minutes later before T. Bay added two straight goals off assists from James Chadwick (Amherst, N.Y. / Amherst Central) and Renaud. Renaud and Shafer both scored goals in the final 3:15 of the third quarter. The Storm led 24-1 after three quarters.
Five different players scored for the Storm in the fourth quarter. Neil Gardner (Buffalo, N.Y. / Bishop Timon) scored two goals, while Bret Swan (Acton City, Ont. / Halton Hills), Tommy Bischel (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville North), Hunter Hays (Plain City, Ohio / St. Francis DeSales) and T. Bay each scored one. Lake Erie won the game 30-4.
Renaud tied the Lake Erie school record and set the G-MAC record for goals in a single game with ten. He added two assists for a total of 12 points, setting a Lake Erie and G-MAC record for points.
T. Bay and Shafer each had four goals and one assist. P. Bay had three goals while Bishop and Gardner scored two apiece. Donahue led the Storm with six groundballs. Reed Hnidy (Saskatoon, Sask. / Genesee CC) had five groundballs and a team-high caused turnovers. Swan had four groundballs as he won 12 faceoffs.
As a team, Lake Erie set single game records with shots (77), points (39) and goals (30).
Lake Erie will return to the field Saturday (March 24) when they travel to take on Mercyhurst with the game set to start at 3:00 pm.
