ANDOVER, Mass. –The Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team was in action today as they defeated by top ranked Merrimack, 16-11.
The Warriors opened the scoring in the second minute of the game, and grabbed a 1-0 lead. The Storm responded, and tied the game when Mitchell Stokes (New Westminster, B.C. / New Westminster Secondary) found the back of the net. 10 seconds Merrimack regained a 2-1 edge with a goal. After three minutes of scoreless action the Storm tied the game as Edmond Renaud (Carlisle, Ont. / Waterdown District / Pfeiffer) scored off a feed from Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg), with just under nine minutes remaining in the quarter. A minute and a half later the Warriors scored and took a 3-2 advantage. The teams played solid defense over the next seven minutes, and with three seconds remaining in the quarter, Lake Erie tied the game at 3-3 when John Kezerian (Melrose, Mass. / Malden Catholic) found the back of the net.
The Storm grabbed their first lead of the game 30 seconds into the second quarter when Austin Bishop (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) scored off an assist from Shafer. Three minutes later Lake Erie took a two goal advantage when Shafer found the back of the net off a feed from Bishop. A minute later the Storm extended their lead to 6-3 when Bishop scored off an assist from Stokes. The Storm defense held the Warriors scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the second quarter. Merrimack ended the second quarter with three straight goals to tie the game at 6-6 at the intermission.
The Warriors carried their momentum over to the third quarter as they opened the second half with four straight goals to take a 10-6 edge, with just under four minutes remaining in the quarter. Lake Erie cut into the Merrimack edge when Kyle Barna (Medina, N.Y. / Pfeiffer) found the back of the net, to make the score 10-7. The Storm entered the fourth quarter behind10-7.
The Warriors opened the fourth quarter with a goal 40 seconds into the quarter. Lake Erie responded 15 seconds later when Mack Fall (Morgantown, W. Va. / University) scored off an assist from Brandon Donohue (South Buffalo, N.Y. / Bishop Timon St. Jude). After four minutes of scoreless action the Warriors answered with two consecutive goals, and took a 13-8 advantage with just over seven minutes remaining in the game. Shafer found the back of the net for his second goal of the game with just over six minutes remaining in the game. Merrimack answered with three straight goals over a three minute span to take a 16-9 edge with two minutes remaining in the game. The Storm made a late run with a pair of goals from Tim Bay (Canadaigua, N.Y. / Canadaigua Academy) and Bishop to make the score 16-11, but the Storm fell 16-11.
The Storm was led by Shafer as he had a pair of goals and three assists in the game. Bishop led the Storm in goals as he had three goals. Donohue led Lake Erie in groundballs as he picked up six in the game. Tyler Manning (Hamburg, N.Y. / Bishop Timon St. Jude) led the Storm defense as he had three caused turnovers and three groundballs.
Lake Erie will return to the field Saturday (March 10) when the host Rollins with the game set to start at 1 p.m.
