Storm Wins Eighth Straight, Top Walsh 18-5

PAINESVILLE, Ohio-- The 15th-ranked Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team rolled to its eighth straight win Friday (April 18), defeating ECAC foe Walsh University 18-5 for their eighth straight victory.

The Storm (8-3)dominated the first quarter, outscoring the Cavaliers 3-0.  Reagan Harding (Saskatoon, Sask./Bishop James Mahoney) picked up a pair of goals in the quarter, the latter assisted by Macgregor Johnston (Nanaimo, B.C./Dover Bay.  Trevor Tarte (Amhertsburg, Ont./Kiski Prep) scored the game's second goal, assisted by Austin Bishop (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg).

Lake Erie continued to roll, scoring the first three goals in the second quarter.  Harding scored the first goal, followed by a goal from Bishop, assisted by Tarte.  Robert Pelky (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport/Finger Lakes CC) got on the scoreboard with a goal to make it 3-0 Storm.  After Walsh got on the board, Mitchell Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) scored on a goal assisted by Andrew Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchoque-Medford).  Bishop added his second goal late in the quarter to make it 8-1 Storm before the Cavaliers added a goal in the final second to cut the lead to six heading into the half.

After Walsh scored to start the third, the Storm rattled off six straight goals in the quarter.  Harding scored the first one unassisted, followed by one by Matthew Redmond (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley).  Mulcahy then assisted on the next two, one to Shafer and one to Tarte.  Shafer then scored on a goal assisted by Harding before he assisted on a goal by Johnston to make it 14-3 at the end of three.

Once again, Walsh scored the first of the fourth quarter before Harding scored his fifth goal.  Senior Louis Eron (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) scored his first goal of his career, assisted by Bishop.  After Walsh scored their fifth, Ryan Gibson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) picked off a clearing pass, charged in and scored his first career goal.  Tarte wrapped up the game his third goal to seal the Storm victory.

Harding led the Storm with six points on five goals, one assist.  Tarte and Shafer had three goals, one assist apiece.  Bishop had two goals, two assists for four points while Johnston had one goal, two assists.  Eron, Gibson, Matt Redmond and Pelky had one goal apiece.  Senior Mulcahy had two assists while classmate Stockton had one. 

Justin Goodwin (New Westminster, B.C/New Westminster Secondary) had a team-high nine groundballs in addition to two caused turnovers.  Senior Rashad Brown (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport/Genesee CC/Mars Hill) went an impressive 19-of-21 (90%) on faceoffs, picking up eight groundballs.  Seniors Adam Bakular (Courtenay, B.C./G.P. Vanier) and Tarte had four groundballs.

Tom Lipomi (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) picked up the win in net, making five saves.

Overall, the Storm had a 38-13 groundball advantage, in addition to outshooting Walsh 59-19.  The Lake Erie man-down unit did not allow a goal on three Cavalier attempts.

The Storm returns to action next Saturday (April 26) against ECAC rival Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa.
