#11 Pfeiffer Takes Storm in Defensive Battle

MISENHEIMER, N.C..—The Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team fell in a defensive battle with 11th-ranked Pfeiffer University, 6-4, on the road Saturday (March 15).

The first quarter proved to be a defensive stalemate on both sides, with Pfeiffer's Elliot Gilbert scoring the lone goal in the final ten seconds. Robert Hope added a second goal for the Falcons to start the second quarter.  Macgregor Johnston (Nanaimo, B.C/Dover Bay) got the Storm on the scoreboard with a man-up goal, assisted by Reagan Harding (Sakatoon, Sak./Bishop James Mahoney).  The Storm then tied the game at two on a goal by Rob Pelkey (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport/Finger Lakes CC), assisted by Mitchell Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg), closing out the scoring in the first-half.

Matthew Michaeli regained the lead for Pfeiffer early in the third quarter but the Storm tied it up late in the frame with a goal by Austin Bishop (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg).  James Shepard gave Pfieffer the lead on a man-up opportunity, followed by Hope's second goal of the game.  Trailing by two, Rashad Brown (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport/Genesee CC/Mars Hill) won the ensuing face-off for the Storm and Johnston scored his second goal to cut the lead to one.  However, Steven Tilmon added a late insurance goal and the Falcons defense kept the Storm at bay to close out the game.

Johnston led the Storm with two goals while Pelky and Bishop had one.  Harding and Shafer tallied one assist.  Brown, Justin Goodwin (New Westminster, B.C./New Westminster Secondary) and Adam Bakular (Courtenay, B.C./G.P. Vanier) had three groundballs apiece.  Bakular also caused seven turnovers.

Nicholas Simonetti (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome/Queens) made 11 saves in net.

Pfeiffer owned an 8-6 advantage on faceoffs and a slight edge in shots, 31-30.  Falcons grabbed 30 groundballs compared to the Storm's 24.  Both teams were 19-of-21 on clears and caused 11 turnovers.

The Storm return to action Wednesday (March 19), hosting Ohio Valley University.
