Storm Falls to Division-I Bowling Green in Overtime

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Lake Erie College men's basketball team was defeated today by Division-I Bowling Green State University in overtime, 109-106.   

The Storm opened the scoring in the game when Brogan Scott (Wadsworth, Ohio / Highland) knocked down a three pointer off an assist by Jordan Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South).  Lake Erie continued their strong start as they led the Falcons, 13-12 at the under 16 media timeout.  The Storm's quick start was propelled by Scott as he had eight of the thirteen points.  After the media timeout, the Storm was able to go on a 7-0 run to stretch their lead to 23-15. The run was sparked by Lamont Rhodes (Bedford, Ohio / Bedford) as he had four of the seven Storm points during the run.  After a couple of minutes of back and forth action, the Falcons went on a 7-0 run of their own to cut the Lake Erie lead to 30-27 with just over eight minutes remaining in the half.  Bowling Green tied the game at 32 points apiece, forcing a Storm timeout with 6:50 minutes remaining in the first half.  Lake Erie was able to regain a 42-37 lead at the final media timeout of the half when Gabe Kynard (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) hit a three pointer right before the break.  The Falcons were able to end the half with a flurry as they took a 50-48 lead into the intermission. 

At the half, the Storm was led by their offense as they shot 56 percent from the field, and 50 percent from behind the arc. 

The second half started as a battle as the game was tied at 57 points apiece at the 17:20 mark in the second half.  A quick 5-0 run by the Falcons gave them a 66-61 advantage at the first media timeout of the second half.  Out of the timeout, Bowling Green continued their strong play as they stretched their lead to 71-61 to force a Lake Erie timeout.  The Storm was able to trim the Falcons lead to 94-88 through the middle of the final half, and the Storm trailed by six with 3:42 minutes remaining in the game.  Out of the timeout, the Storm went on a quick 5-0 run to cut the Falcons lead to 94-93.  The run was capped by a Michael Morris (New Palestine, Ind. / New Palestine) three pointer.  Lake Erie tied the game with under a minute to play when Kynard drove in for a layup, to make the score 95-95.  After a Bowling Green basket, the Storm responded when Harrison Riggs (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) drove the length of the court to tie the game with a layup at 97 points apiece.  The game would remain tied at the end of regulation and the game went to overtime. 

The overtime period was an extremely close battle as the lead switched hands seven times in the five minute overtime period.  The Falcons grabbed the lead late, and a last second three by the Storm was off the mark as the Storm fell, 109-106.   

The Storm was led by Kynard as he had a game and career high 28 points.  Kynard also led the Storm in rebounds as he grabbed nine boards.  Riggs added a career high in assists with eight as well as pitching in with 12 points.  Ryan Middendorf (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota East) added 15 points on 3-5 shooting from behind the arc.  Rhodes provided Lake Erie with valuable minutes off the bench as he had 10 points. 

As a team the Storm out-rebounded the Falcons, 37-36.  The Storm also had more second chance points as they had 17 to the Falcons nine. 

Lake Erie will return to the hardwood Wednesday (Nov. 22) when they host Mercyhurst, with the game set to tip at 1 p.m.
